Easiest way to change icons in a ROM?

Hi all,

I'm using a ROM, and I really, really, really dislike the Wi-fi and data icons on the notification/status bar.

I've got the files I want to change it for and I wanted to know the easiest, safest and noob-friendly way to change them?

Basically open framework-res.apk in some ziptool and just replace the icons.
