How to manually open ClockworkMod recovery on boot?

Can anyone tell me: if I flash a ROM that won't boot, how can I activate ClockworkMod recovery manually on boot to replace it? I've googled and lots of threads say how to get ClockworkMod onto the phone and boot into it from a running Android system but what's the magic key combination to use if Android won't boot? I tried Power + Vol- but that just seemed to (temporarily?) stuff up my SD card so not feeling too eager to experiment with any other key combinations...

Thanks,

It's power + vol -

Shut down the blade

Keep your finger on the button volume - and press power

Keep your finger on the button volume - till you enter in clockworkmod

OK, thanks. This will work on phone with ClockworkMod in recovery partition even if phone is stuck at green android after failed boot? I'm in process of customizing a ROM for first time and want to make sure I can recover if I stuff it up...

[EDIT] Have just tried from cold boot and works as expected, thanks! Not sure what I did wrong when I tried earlier - maybe didn't hold vol- for long enough

Thanks but I needed to boot into recovery on a phone that wouldn't boot so running an app was not an option. Anyway - power + vol- was what I needed to know.
