Powering up with + button doesn't work.

Hi,

I've been trying in vain since Monday to get this bloody phone stripped of the Orange software and rebuilt with something else. When I power up the phone, holding down the 'volume up' or + key, the phone just boots up as normal. When I hold the volume down button '-' I can see the 'FTM' screen.

So, does this mean that there's something wrong with the phone? In normal mode the volume up key works.

I'm stuck at this point for now.

Nope, FTM is the default recovery mode.

To install a custom one like Clockworkmod you'll first need to root your phone and then install the custom recovery. Then you can wipe the Orange stuff from the ROM and install a ROM without the crap.

Sorry, the reason that I mentioned FTM was to show that the down button works but the up one doesn't. The phone has already been rooted.

This is quite common with new phones.

My solution was to install the Android SDK and drivers and use adb to reboot the phone into bootloader / recovery.

use :

adb reboot [bootloader|recovery]

Some phones just need the menu key to be pressed as well as the vol+ button as you boot.

Actually is the phone definitely gen1 atm?

Yes, this is very true. The only way I could get my phone to flash the contents of the /image folder on my sd-card (going to Gen2) was to take out the battery and then power it on while pressing down menu and the vol + key. It wouldn't play ball if I didn't remove the battery.

My Gen1 wouldn't enter clockwork until I held down all 3 of power + vol up + menu

And that was after installing clockwork from Rom Manager too.

You have got the image directory with the tpt stuff in it on the sd card haven't you otherwise nothing would happen

Ok, looking on the SD card, I don't see a directory called 'image'. Is that what you mean, or have I misunderstood? Also, I read the guide to mean that there were two ways of customising the phone (1) Clockwork or (2) TPT. As I've been attempting to use Clockwork I don't think there should be any TPT related files on my phone.

Am I wrong??

They were showing you the TPT way. I'd recommend you TPT, as most ROMs are Gen2, And Gen2 is better

You could be...wrong that is. :)

Have you installed Clockwork on your phone, like did you download something like ROM Manager ???

This is the first essential step....

when RM installed launch it. You should then Flash a Recovery, as in install an appropriate Clockwork on your phone....

As you have a GEN1 OSF, the latest Recovery i.e. 3.0.2.7, will not work

You need to scroll down to the last option on the RM screen, "All ClockworkMod Recoveries"...You should be presented with a list of Recoveries, from 3.0.0.6/3.0.1.4, etc

Pick the 3.0.1.4 and allow to install....

Then, in ROM Manager still, Back Up Current Rom, so you will have a fall-back option.....this will bring you into Recovery.....phone will reboot into the appropriate menu option in Recovery for Backup. Do it, called Nandroid Backup.

When you are ready to flash a new ROM, this is not TPT, different procedure, but you learn more!!!!......you can Reboot into Recovery, and choose Apply Update, either from Update.zip, or choose which .zip has your Update......It will always be a xxxxxxx.zip, not in an \image directory, but where you pick in Recovery.

To get into Recovery normally, without going through ROM Manager, or Quick Start, or whatever, you must boot/start your phone with the and the Vol- and Power buttons pressed together, until you see the recovery screen......

Even the way you have asked this question means you are trying to get into Bootloader, using the Vol+ and Power (and Menu sometimes).....this is for TPT....and you will flash image on your SD Card if there is one, so ppl should be careful, delete images once flashed.....

So, for Recovery, the way in is through ROM Manager, Quick Boot, or by holding Vol- and Power during boot/start of phone.

First thing is to ensure you actually have an appropriate Recovery on the phone, see above.

To help with CWR and ROM Manager, here is a pretty good guide

That's a massive help, thanks a mil. Of course it has also brought to light all the bits that I haven't done!

This didn't happen. The phone rebooted into its normal mode.

choose Apply Update, either from Update.zip, or choose which .zip has your Update

Downloaded Silversprings and installed it on the phone. I rebooted it and now it's stuck on a new screen with the word 'Android' across the screen. It's just hanging there. What have I done to my phone? Yikes!

How you do this??? Without ClockworkMod?? You using ADB or what??

Did you do this............

when RM installed launch it. You should then Flash a Recovery, as in install an appropriate Clockwork on your phone....

Like, you did Flash the Recovery??? as in the instructions....!!!

Why/how you download anything, apply any update, like new ROM, before you get ClockworkMod on your phone???

Did you or did you not:

a) Use ROM Manager to Flash the appropriate recovery on your phone, while connected to Internet, it has to get it from somewhere???? yes/no

If yes proceed to :)

if No stop and do it again, and make sure you have actually Flashed Recovery....3.0.1.4.....for GEN1, onto your phone...this is most important!!!

Should look something like this:

screenshot_12.jpg

Like the top panel should tell you which version of CWR is installed...in your case you need 3.0.1.4...as I said previously.

If there is no Recovery, or if it is a later version, as in 3.0.2.7....you need to follow the instructions given to flash the appropriate version for GEN1:

when RM installed launch it. You should then Flash a Recovery, as in install an appropriate Clockwork on your phone....

As you have a GEN1 OSF, the latest Recovery i.e. 3.0.2.7, will not work

What ROM is Silversprings GEN1 or 2??

Do you mean Swedish Spring???

If it is SS, you should use the guide for installation given in the SS thread

Installation

Use Clockwork Recovery 3.0.1.4 or similar to install the ROM and addons. Remember to Wipe data/cache when installing the ROM (before or after does not matter). No wipe, no whine...

You probably need to pull the battery, and re-boot, as I don't think any flash of new ROM has occurred, but please post to let us know!!!

When you say "installed" this Silversprings, what exactly do you mean??

Like install has to be done either by TPT, or by Recovery!!! which did you do??

Do you mean install, or simply downloaded and stored the zip on SD card?? where??

Goodness me, so much confusion...

Firstly, If you want to install a custom ROM I recomend you upgrade to Gen2 using these instructions. Its a very simple process, and it will automatically install clockwork. After that your phonw will be compatible with newer ROMs like cyanogenmod. Your phone does not need to boot properly.

If you don't want to do that:

I don't know what Silversprings does, so I cant help you with that. If you don't have any data to restore and you want to install a custom ROM, then you can install clockwork using fastboot (instructions in my link below), without having to get your phone to boot properly first.

you originally got your phone to boot into FTM mode using just volume down. This means that you can boot into recovery mode without any problem. forget combinations of a thousand buttons, it already works.

You need to get the correct version of clockworkmod (Gen1) installed to your recovery partition so that it replaces FTM mode. Follow the pinned guide on the subject.

After that you should have clockwork up and running, and you can install any Gen1 ROM.

Sorry, you mean my post(s) are confusing?? or what

I tried to answer the confusion which exists regarding using TPT or Clockwork to install ROM...there are no combinations of a thousand buttons, just the correct combinations for either a) Recovery or B) Bootloader. (Some newer versions do require 3-button combination for Bootloader....to do TPT!!!)

Stephens linked Guide is very good, but very long-winded, as it should be, for a definitive Guide.....

But there is a definite bias against ROM Manager, in favour of Recovery Manager, but that is not a problem for me.....but it may cause confusion for less experienced users.

I try to answer the questions put by the OP, so let's see what happens. We don't want anyone to feel they have bricked, when they have no, just panicked.

Just finally, I know the poor guy is probably confused regarding which ROM he downloaded, I think he means Swedish Spring......being Irish I know there is an Hotel in Cork called the Silver Springs :)

Finally got the 'de-oranged r8' image on the phone. Tried Swedish Springs (yes, I did type the hotel name Silver Springs by mistake!) but it just hung the phone after reboot. Will try again later when I recover from the panic!

Oh and 'he' is quite positively a 'she'. B)

You guys (and gals!) are a wealth of info, so a genuine 'thanks' to you all for getting me this far!

Damn it!

My Dad has the same phone, ran the same things on his. Rebooted the phone, can see the Orange-Free wallpaper in the background, but now the touchscreen doesn't work. Can't input his PIN. If I hold down the power button I can't confirm the phone shut-off via the on-screen option. I have to remove the battery. I'll restore the Orange ROM for now and hope someone here has an idea later.

... Silver Springs ... ugh :)

You had a touchscreen lockup - on what ROM? You should be able to fix by turning on /off the screen

I tried installing the 'de-oranged r8' image on his phone. Looked like it had worked in that the Orange wallpaper had been replaced and fewer apps on the homepage. However, when the pad popped up to enter his PIN, the screen was completely non-responsive.

I've also unsuccessfully tried today to install the Portugeese Springs. It got stuck on the splash screen. Are these 'springs' versions supposed to work on Gen1 phones?

Hi,

Bought a san fransisco of ebay and tried to flash tpt with latest gingerbread 15.

would not boot into recovery at all and just got FTM screen.

Eventtually just as i was about to give up the three button method noted in this forum worked a treat.

It was quite a task to actually hold three buttons with the back off and battery removed (tried all!).

Happy days worked a treat.

Many thanks to all.
