Problem installing rom

Hello another new SF owner here, ok I have had my Sf for a couple of weeks, I read through the forum before buying and to make myself aware of how it all works. Since owning I have unlocked and de-oranged using the advice here.

My problem is that for a couple of days I have been trying to install the r12-update-modaco custom rom, I have followed the instructions without fault as per the guide elswhere but still keep getting the same message " Error you need to install a custom recovery before you backup your firmware"

I have updated the data base via the menu button as instructed but I cannot get any further where I am going wrong?

I appreciate that you get this query a lot but I have used the search option and scoured the site for help before posting.

you need to flash a custom recovery:

Thanks very, very much for that I downloaded the Rom manager app, 30 minutes now running Android 2.2, once again thanks for taking the time to post the advice.
