I am having difficulty deciding between SS RLS 5 and CM 7. I have tried and tested both and SS RLS 5 has that slight edge.

I like the fact that SS RLS 5 is:

  • incredibly stable
  • vanilla Android
  • very efficient in all it does!

What I don't like in SS RLS 5 is:
    • the 2.2 interface (although I have changed to the Gingerbread theme to overcome this)
    • the default SMS limit of three messages (I know this can be changed if I use Handcent or GO!SMS, but I like to keep the stock apps as they look cleaner on the homescreen)
    • how difficult it is to move the cursor around (which is fixed in Gingerbread with that arrow)

However, I'm one of these people who have to have the most recent updates/latest version which is why I like CM 7 (with the exception of ADW.. I like to use the stock Gingerbread Launcher as I find ADW incredibly laggy). Another thing I have noticed about CM 7 is how draining on the battery it is! SS RLS 5 will quite happily go a few hours in idle and drop a few percent, CM 7 on the other hand has a visible difference in the battery bar! If CM 7 didn't have the following issues, I would quite happily use CM 7:

    [*]drains the battery fast

[*]the auto-brightness isn't exactly perfect (on boot, it can get stuck on -1 = full brightness!)

Any personal preferences with why you use one or the other, and how you overcome your dislikes in one of these ROMs? SS is almost perfect apart from the cursor positioning and SMS limit :)

Try Ginger Stir Fry, it would give you the cursor as well as good battery life, it's vanilla and stable. It also uses the Stock Gingerbread launcher as well.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. Is the battery life comparable to that of SS? What is it in CM 7 that is draining the battery? Maybe something I could disable...

Edit:

Thanks btw :)

Yeah I used to run SS before, I find it at least as good as SS if not better.

It seems the libaudio in CM7 is draining the battery, a patch has been submitted for it though so it should be fixed soon.

Yes, Ginger Stir Fry. It's the latest, battery life is comparable to SS5 and it is more stable than Cm7.

The first Rom I tried was a variant on SS5 and I loved it. However, all the talk of the extra features and the more up to date nature of CM7 made me try it. I didn't like it: far worse battery life and a lot of random crashing (related to GPS, I think) meant I jumped to GSF as soon as it arrived. I'm not tempted in the slightest to go back.

Thanks both - flashing as we speak :).

It's a shame wbaw is discontinuing development on GSF but can't blame him! I will give this one a shot and hopefully will get on with it!

Where, in CM 7, is the change log (something I could never find) as far as I'm aware, they just release nightly builds - but I have no idea how to find out the changes they have made (such as the libaudio issue).

I'll be Frank. But you can still be leemain88 (points for you if you name the film :))

No-one is going to answer that because it is kind of obvious  (go to ROMs and ROM customisation and look for a thread that says Ginger Stir Dry  )

Really - u get good battery life on GSF compaired to SS5??

I was on SS5 and flashed to Gen2 and GSF last night and found the battery life good if you don't use the phone. Phone was plugged in for about 2 hours to pc at work charging, use during the day was checking emails etc, no major use etc and battery was less than 20% by the time i got home. Ok so it wasn't fully charged when i left but was usb charging for a while.

FYI - phone fully charged not been used - just screen sleep only and battery is at 94% already. battery stats say 1 hour since full charge!!

Thinking about sticking SS5 back on it. Can't stand the gingerbread keyboard either!! It was a option on SS5 and much prefer the other keyboard option.

Going to try the battery wipe trick and see how it goes tomorrow - no improvement then i'm going back to SS5 i think.

Swedish Spring beats the bug filled CM hands down.

I was a faithful follow of the Swedish Springs, but I bit the bullet and installed Ginger Stir Fry (So easy, I dunno what I was panic-ing about xD )

And I have NEVER seen anything better, its clean, stable, and the SS of Gen2, but IMO quicker too!

I have also heard many good things about Ginger Stir Fry, I would suggest trying that over CM7.

I have tried SS, FLB, CM7 and GSF. For me FLB r11b was the best 2.2 ROM and I liked the speed of CM7 (but not the poor battery life and FCs). GSF r9 is now the best ROM available for the Blade, everything is good and everything works. If you are on SS (or any 2.2 ROM) you will be in for treat when you move to GSF.

I know what you're saying - although the keyboard I think you're on about is the HTC IME mod? If so, there's a link on the forum with a zip file for this. That's what I done and now have 2.3 GSF with the HTC keyboard and am a real happy bunny! :)
