Guest imt21 Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 I've searched and can see the advantages of unlocking the SPV so that unsigned apps can be run. Just wondering - are there any disadvantages I should know about before going ahead with an unlock?
Guest lutzh Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 the mayor disandvantage is that you'll spend even more time with that little thing. can your girl handle that? otherwise go get a new love... seriously there are no known bugs from unlocking/de-certification. cheers, lutz
Guest pjc Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 Lutzh is right, there are no disadvantages. You should be aware that some users have experienced trouble hard reseting and had to return their phone, but dont let that put you off! most users on this forum have had no trouble...
Guest Bazz Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 Problems requiring return of phone are greatly exaggerated in my opinion. The main disadvantage is having to get your phone back to the state it was in (the procedure deletes EVERYTHING on your phone) and the pain involved in doing it (it can take about a million and one attempts to get it working!). I didn't do it for ages, but with all the games out I couldn't resist. I haven't looked back.
Guest madu Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 And I have looked back... And you know what I see?? A horrible horrible past! :) No going back now! I mean even the good old Task manager on it's own is worth decert!! Not even talking doom/gbcemu....
Guest Dylan Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 I do agree with this, it is worth doing, however i still can't send SMS and it's doing my head in! Still want some help on this if anyone can hear me!!!
Guest madu Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 Make sure you have a correct SMS service centre number entered in telephony options. There is a solution somewhere on the forum if you search and the no. for SMS centre too. PS: I cannot tell you the number now, since my phone is in Bootloader and is flashing with tweaked firmware.. :) hehehe
Guest almark Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 Dylan , I agree, this seems to be the only disadvantage to unlocking. I reverted to a locked phone as I need sms. when the phone is locked but you can't send sms, (the new icon doesn't show anything) did you know that you can recieve sms! (but you can't reply!)
Guest madu Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 Since you just cannot send SMSs - it must be a blank entry in the Service Centre number then! And if you unlock with an *advanced* UK method by modifying files - it should resert ok with all the settings in place! I had no SMS problems.
Guest amo Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 I do agree with this, it is worth doing, however i still can't send SMS and it's doing my head in! Still want some help on this if anyone can hear me!!! You may also need the proper sim updates to activate the service. Fone orange and ask them to send you the text messaging sim updates.
Guest dhutchison Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 I held off unlocking to make sure there were no problems with doing it. I unlocked it last week and have had no problems, I highly recommend it. Also, I've had no problems with sending or receiving SMS messages. I did restore my settings from a backup so that may have kept the service centre number?
Guest Dylan Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Hi, I reset the phone by editing the mxip... files. I've checked the SMS number - it's fine (+447973100973). When I try and use Irange Update i get this message - This service is only available for use with the Orange network! What's weird about that is that Orange backup DOES work?!?! Also, has anyone spoken to Orange since unlocking their phone? The only thing that's stopping me from calling them is if they ask what I've done to it and it's invalidated my warranty!!! Help me!!!!
