Hello,

After been unable to buy it new both online and instore, I took the plunge and bought the vega second hand from ebay, can't wait for it to arrive.

I hope I didn't make a mistake with second hand costs in the range of £190.. roughly £70-80 pounds less than a first gen second hand ipad; but am not an apple fan really :)

I'm going to use it mainly as moving map and checklist viewer for x-plane (a flight simulator) but will definitely explore other uses too.

So here it is. I would like to install the latest and most stable custom firmware there is but I've got a few questions I hope you can help me with:

1) which one is the latest stable custom rom to pick? I hear the corvus5 is good (?) also need the android market

2) when purchasing apps from the android app store, if I flash with a new rom will I loose my purchases?

3) having never used an android smartphone/tablet before, is there anything that should I know?

Thanks!

Luca

Hi and welcome

1. Corvus5

2. No

3. Huge amounts. Where do you want to start

Seriously. First step is to learn how to customise the launcher (home screen) and learn that the hardware buttons have at least 2 ways to press them. Short press on back, to, err, go back. Long press to bring up the menu for an app (usually). Short press on power to standby (or some other action you might set in an app like Spare Parts), long press to bring up the power menu. Even longer press to shut the Vega down (only use if no other option - never good to shutdown an operating system like this).

Hi Adam

FYI, of course backup is a good idea, but not needed for purchased apps. If you wipe (or get a new device), "My apps" in the market shows the apps you've purchased and you can just go ahead and reinstall.

Hi Luca

You will find the best recommended app for backup is Titanium Backup. This requires a rooted device - and guess what - the Vega is pre-rooted!

You can use the professional version of this to automatically backup your apps and settings, and then synchronise these to a dropbox account. This means in the worst possible case of your Vega being totally banjaxed you can not only reinstall the apps from the market, but also recover your Angry Birds save games!!

Your Vega is a fantastic and forgiving device - enjoy playing with it and on it :)

Always have your stuff when you need it with @Dropbox. 2GB account is free! http://db.tt/xq2Zvod

You will enjoy messing with your vega. Hope you do anyhow. I agree about the rom corvus5 I personally think it is the best.

It's the only rom that plays most games I try on it. Gangsar 1 and 2 are both great on it. Also it plays other stuff that the other roms just fail on.

Hope you enjoy your vega.

If I wanted to install the corvus5sp1 rom from scratch, is this the correct order to follow?

So as far as I understand I would need to do the following steps, please correct if I'm wrong or if I need additional steps for this.

1) install AUDI and select stockrom usb drivers

2) install the modified stock rom 1.10 (just copying the zip to the sdcard)

3) in AUDI change to modaco custom rom usb drivers

4) install corvus5 (just copying the zip to the sdcard)

5) install corvus5SP1 (just copying the zip to the sdcard)

6) tadam!

p.s.

what is CWM ?

Thanks!

Luca

CWM stands for clockwork mod, its basically a program which is like recovery mode, but lets u do exciting and happy stuff  like back up ur stuff, install roms...

Clockworkmod is a great piece of software. I use it all the time when I put on different roms for any of my Android devices.

For me there's 3 essential bits of software I have installed on my 3 android devices and they're free too, these are:

Astro File Manager

Titanium Backup

Rom Manager

argh it's like a set of chinese boxes, I keep opening the boxes only to find smaller boxes..

let's assume I have a vanilla vega tablet (should arrive tomorrow) which I would like to install to corvus5 sp1 and leave it there (just need a good stable platform and android apps :).

I found out I need the clockwork mod in order to install corvus sp1.

I found out I need adb in order to install clockworkmod :-)

I found out I need debug usb drivers for this :-)

so to recap is this correct?

run audi and choose install adb mode

install clockwork mod (typing the console adb commands)

install corvus 5 following cws instructions

install corvus 5 sp1

please help :-)

If you download AUDI which is an automated windows driver installer it will automatically install your drivers just download it follow the instructions you then if you Download clockworkmod extract the file then choose the windows.bat file and it will install.

Then you can download Corvus5 transfer it to your sd card, then you can then boot into recovery which will be ClockworkMod.

managed to get it setup and running this morning :)

I was lucky as the guy who sold me the vega had already installed the clockworksmod so all was left was to copy the corvus5 zips to the sdcard and load the roms.

Thanks a lot for all your help guys!

the tablet rocks by the way.

One more question, what app would I need to being able to browse my shared folder on my desktop computer using wifi? I have a list of .pdf files in there I would like to quickly browse and access on the vega

Hi Luca

I use the free app ES File Manager to browse shared folders on my Windows Home Server.

You will need to:

1 Make the folder shared onto your network and give it a sensible share name that you can remember e.g. \\computername\PDFs

2 In ES File Explorer (or whichever file explorer you use) create a new samba server by using either \\computername\PDFs or the ip address \\192.168.1.xxx\PDFs as the server address

3 Put in the account name and password of whatever account you want to use that can access this and name the share whatever you want e.g. PDFs

4 Browse to the share and copy whatever files you want locally

Alternatively, you can mount the network share locally using a free CIFS tool like CIFS manager.  This is similar to the steps above, however as well as specifying what the remote folder is, you will also specify what the local "virtual" folder on your SD card will be.  This allows direct interaction with the files without copying them locally as the system treats them as local copies.

Hope this helps...
