Guest redhawkuk Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 I've been considering a ZTE Blade aka SF Orange handset but I've heard rumours they're no longer shipped with amoled screens anymore. :( Is this true, has anyone recently purchased a handset from the Orange shop or Argos that was certified amoled?? Also can you tell which screen types are shipped from the markings on the box?? As I understand the image quality between the two are pretty similar although amoled use less power, show blacks better and burn out faster. If my handset does come with tft what is the viewing angle like, is it similar to amoled or as shockingly bad like the ZTE Racer?? Richard S.
Guest k0zmic Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 It is true they are no longer shipped with OLED screens. I think you have to be really fortunate to get an OLED brand new now, although some people have received refurbished OLED's as a replacement phone if they gave in their TFT one under warranty for whatever reason e.g. hardware fault. Regarding if you can tell the screen types juts from the box, I'm not sure. My guess would be probably not though. I can only speak for the viewing angles on the TFT and it's fairly good IMO, it might be a bit worse since I have a screen protector on.
Guest richardw1992 Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Pretty sure they are ALL TFT now and no OLEDs. Myself I have an OLED and apart from the differences you have already mentioned between the two screens there arent a lot. One thing to note the tft will be much better quality than that of the racer as it is a higher resolution, giving it sharper picture quality and improved clarity. For the money you will not be disappointed in the screen quality!
Guest Roph Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) ZTE uses two suppliers for their TFT screens (on the blade at least), LEAD and TRULY. It seems to be luck of the draw as for which TFT you'll get. I'm not sure which one I have I'm afraid as I flashed a custom rom as soon as I got the phone, but I just took some photos with all the lights off in the room: (phone is at maximum brightness for all these photos) The worst you'll get is from a 3/4 view: I'm pretty happy with the blacks and viewing angles here. Funnily enough, it's better than the quite shocking "super" (why do they use this name?) LCD on a £400+ HTC Sensation: Having seen an OLED Blade, I wouldn't be too sad at missing out on one, as it is a Pentile subpixel layout display. This means you'll get fuzzy edges and text, as you lack 3 real subpixels per pixel. Edited July 18, 2011 by Roph
Guest iNoobz2Droid Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 view angle is no problem and depending on daytime you will have much more problems with reflections of display than by changes because of TFT viewangle
Guest redhawkuk Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) Hi, thanks for everyone's input regarding the screen quality it would certainly be interesting to see how it looks against the Racer and my old k770i Sony Ericsson. Unfortunately I had a little accident with my Racer the other day so I maybe buying this handset a little sooner than planned. If anyone has experience with flashing the Racer I would appreciate on some guidance the forum seems a little dead atm and I need to decide wether I should return it to Argos. As for the SF Orange I am curious about the amount of memory it possesses. According to the Orange Shop and Argos it has 150MB of internal memory which seems odd when the Racer is quoted with 256MB. Is that 150MB for storing programs or RAM for running applications?? To add to the confusion the Wikipedia website claims the ZTE Blade has 512MB and 256MB depending on the shipped firmware but no mention of 150MB. Can anyone in the UK confirm the amount of RAM the SF Orange has?? Richard S. Edited July 19, 2011 by redhawkuk
Guest Roph Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 There is 512MB of RAM (just memory), and then 512MB of storage. Some of this is partitioned off and taken up by things like the software and cache and so on. On a default san fran, there is 150MB available for installing applications, which is fine if you're an average user. If you need more space for apps, you can move many of them to the SD card. It's also possible to repartition the internal storage, for example I think around 150mb is partitioned for software, but a ROM like FLB only uses 80MB or so. There are guides for all this on this board :)
