I folks new here so Hellow again to you all and hopefully once I receive my new Vega tomorrow I will become a regular active member !! okay just bought a used vega via ebay where the owner has advised me that that he had installed Android marketplace on it now once I receive my new toy !! I plan to fairly quickly install an alternative ROM.

so okay basics first !! take it with the previous owner installing the market place on the tablet already this wont affect the installing off an alternative rom and when I do install the alternative ROM it will simply overwrite everything anyway ???

have windows xp here, just how risky is installing one off the new ROMS with regards being done by a beginner ie. how easy is it to brick the unit ??!!

is there a video guide available for putting on a new ROM via xp ??

is there a new ROM due out within the next few weeks worth waitting on or is one of the versions out just now more than good at transforming the stock unit ??

thats it for now guys thanks for now.

Welcome, John.

You only need to install one ROM via Windows, the moddedd stock ROM.

After that, you can download any of the custom ROMs directly to your Vega, and install them using the ROM manager.

There are guides available Here to help you get started, the first guide is how to upgrade your ROM using windows.

There are lots of great ROMs available, and it's so easy to install one, you can just play around with them. Here are some you might like to try.

Modaco R8 ROM

Corvus5 ROM with service pack 1

Vegacomb beta 1.7

Cyanogenmod

Ganbaro

Only use the modded stock ROM with Vegacomb. Use the Advent stock ROM for the others. The partition sizes in the modded stock ROM are wrong for everything except Vegacomb.

Okay thanks for the warm welcome and off course your excellent advice, can I just ask - this stock rom that you linked to first is this what the previous owner has probably put on to gain the android store ie. is it the only way to gain android store on the stock as supplied vega ??

will leave it at that just now and have a good read thru the previous posts as I know how annoying it can get answering the same old questions time and time again !!

so again if you could just let me know regards the android store and if this modded stock rom is normally the way / only way the standard vega has the store / flash installed upon it ?? then that would be great.

thanks for now

It's not quite as drastic as that, is it? Newbe5 says you lose 30MB from data to system, but you can get round that (if you need to) using Link2SD. I'm using Corvus5 with SP1 on top of the modded stock ROM, with no problems.

The reason I've suggested the modded stock ROM is that it comes with a fully working CWM/ROM manager. The ROM manager in the Advent stock ROM never worked for me.

He may have just added an android marketplace such as Appstore or Slideme. All of the ROMs in the list at the end of my previous mail come with Android market (Google) installed.

u hav to update the usb drivers, i used this>>>http://android.modaco.com/topic/334161-yaudig-usb-driver-guides-for-newcomers-it-works/

then flash to the stock rom/ modded stock (depending on the rom)

then turn on usb storage, copy the zipped rom over.

then go onto the device, open up clockwork mod recovery (rom manager, but a different name)

then perform a nanodroid backup

wipe cache partition, factory reset, and dalvik cache.

then apply zip from sd card :D

simpless ;)

Actually, I've had a little play and I think you're right. Probably a bit drastic.

I do this:

First of all, download the modded stock ROM to your PC. Instuctions and download link here

Next, install it as you would install a normal update. Full software upgrade guide here

Once this is done you don't need to use your PC for upgrades ever again. Instead, to install the ROM of your choice you:

1. Download the ROM of your choice. You can find the links either through this forum or via google.

2. Start the ROM manager app.

3. Choose 'Reboot into recovery'. The Vega will reboot into recovery mode with a short menu at the top left of the screen.

4. You may want to perform a backup first. So select 'Backup' from the menu. Use the volume keys to move up and down the menu, and the power button to select a menu item.

5. When the backup is complete, select 'install zip file from SD card' then select 'choose zip file'.

6. Select the 'downloads' folder and then select the zip file you want.

7. You are then given the opportunity to confirm or backout. When you confirm, the installation begins immediately and takes several minutes.

8. Once intallation is complete, the install menu reappears. Press the hardware back button to get back to main menu, and select the reboot now option. The first boot of a new ROM takes quite a bit longer than normal, so give it a few minutes.

Folks can I just take this opportunity to publicly thanks simon - " simonta " who has went out off his way to get my own newly bought vega up and running with this Corvus 5 rom , initially we spent a good while doing a remote install off the new rom, even thou this must have taken the best part off an hour simon was excellent and very professional in his approach, so much so that I guessed he had some experience off dealing with total beginners like me and at all times was very calm and clear on what had to be done from this end even thou was actually very little !! can honestly say I know for a fact I would have been totally lost without his help !!

due to one or two niggles I was experiencing which I think had possibly been caused by one or two things the previous owner off this vega has installed himself I asked simon if it would be any problem to send the unit down to him as I just felt that as a beginner I would no doubt cause more harm than good trying to put things right !! this suggestion was not a problem to simon who advised me that he would be glad to help out by doing this and would get the tablet set up exactly right and whilst at it add a few extras on the tablet anyway sent the tablet down to him via courier and received an email early the following day just to advise that the tablet had arrived with him and would be ready for uplift within a few hours.

true to his word I received a follow up email just a few hours later to once again advise that everything that should have not been there had been removed and he had totally re installed Corvus 5 as well as adding / setting up the tablet exactly as he has his own set up and by that I mean everything from screensavers / apps etc etc, I never needed to add anything - was I glad !!

arranged to have the tablet picked up on monday, anyway due to the courier failing to collect the parcel from him and the fact that there was a slight mix up on my part for them collecting the tablet the following day simon took it upon himself to personally deliver the parcel to the courier company themselves.

was awoken today by City Link and this was the delivery off my Advent vega back from simon, to say that it has been transformed by him is an understatement, it truely is amazing !! included with the tablet was even a typed letter informing me off all the mods he had carried out on the vega.

now if I had paid £50 for this service I would have still been extremely happy with simons overall customer service but seeing as thou simon insisted that he did not want any payment and that all he was bothered about was that I was happy enough with my newly worked on vega is in this day and age simply amazing !!

to end this had to email simon back again today to ask yet another favour off him, and that was to see if he would do another Vega " Simonta " special ??!! after showing my father my vega he went straight online ordered one and will be on its way to simon as soon as its arrived with him !! off course simon replied back to say not a problem would be more than happy to do this for your father.

thanks simon- again excellent work mate to which again I very much appreciatte !!
