Hi,

New to the forum and have some general queries, if you lovely folk would oblige? First of have done plenty of reading and searching and have a few questions before i try to upgrade my shinny new Vega. Not really Tech Savy so go easy on me! It apears i am running on Android version 2.2 / Ec version 1.9.0 / P10_v1.11 not sure if this makes much odds to my upgrade process? What is the best upgrade and is there just 1 general upgrade which will improve all or most of the issues or do i need to install various Roms to do different tasks? Once The App store is up and running and i am flashed and able to play youtube and I player what are the other must do hacks or tricks?? Any other info that will help me get the most out of my new toy?? As i have said i have read alot about the process already but am unsure as to what is the best and most up to date upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You have a few options here, I think you are running the 1.09 stock rom from Advent. To get the market you can do one of two things. They are either just install the market from an apk file, to be honest not too sure how to do this, or you can install a custom rom such as Modaco's own R8 rom or the Corvus5 rom which includes the market.

Another rom is of course VegaComb which is a port of the Asus Transformer which is based on Android's 3.0 HoneyComb, the rom isn't quite finished yet but not too far off.

Have fun and if you have any questions please post on here. We're a friendly bunch here. :)

Hi and thanks for the response. What are the pro's and cons of R8 and C5?? think i will wait on Honeycomb until its fully tested. Will let you know how i get on, and will be asking for help no doubt shortly! One thing i forgot to ask is How can i make my HTC desire work with my Vega and vice versa assuming they will synch, can i use the phones wi fi/3g to surf on the vega. Prob a bit optimistic at the moment but am curious.

If you have Froyo on your HTC Desire all you need to do is go into Settings>Wireless Networks>Scroll down to Tethering and Portable Hotspot, and select Portable WIfi and it will activate, go into wifi on your Vega and select wifi and search for the device, it should say like Android Sp.

Hope this works.

Also you need to have an unlimited data that entitles you to tether. Not all networks will allow tethering even with an unlimited data package.

Have seen a few non tech savvy people confused by that wording, but when it asks you to insert disk you can browse to any file (doesn't have to be a disk). But just search for AUDI or YAUDIG and they'll guide you through the process.

On the subject of which rom is best its down to personal taste.

From what I have found corvus5 is buttery smooth and perfectly stable.

CM8 is very smooth and has some really nice tweeks for tablets that corvus5 is lacking. It is slightly less stable than corvus5 especially when throwing apps at it for testing, requires a lot more rebooting than modded stock or corvus5.

Vegacombe is a work in progress and is getting there but if you are looking for stability and full functionality stick with corvus5 or CM8.

My personal preference is corvus5 but you should have a try of a few as it only takes 10 minutes to change rom and restore a backup once you are rooted and have clockwork rom installed.

Have fun and remember to backup frequently.

Oh and whats a kernal????

A kernal is what you get popcorn from.

Or some where to buy fried chicken.

INSERT JOKE......

But seriously,

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(computing)

Basically a kernal is a bridge between a device's hardware and the software that runs on it.

Android uses the Linux kernal to control the hardware but apps are written and compiled in Java to make app development easier.

Right..... have got so far, downloaded the vega driver installer. Selected install custom rom using adb

Gone through parts a/b & c until the red box turns green ,

Which then tells me the adb driver is correctly installed you may countinue to install the modaco custom rom

WHAT NEXT!????

Also my vega still seems pretty anonymous when connected to my pc with the usb not sure how to locate it tbh

Also struggled to get into recovery mode via button sequence, is there another way??

Ta, very much.

have you downloaded a custom rom yet?

if so and its modaco r8 from pauls kitchen then......

this is from memory from 5 months ago but i think you now have the drivers ok so connect vega to pc, put vega in usb debugging mode, a little ladybird symbol should appear in the status bar at the top of the vega.

open the downloaded r8 file on your pc click on the relevant windows bat file and it will install across for you.

if you havent downloaded a rom yet then i would suggest download vegatools onto your pc, from solidare here on the forum just do a search , then once installed connect vega and put into usb debugging then from vegatools under the restore tab i think choose the option to install pauls restore and clockwork mod recovery ( possibly rom manager i cant remember ) but with this on your vega the world of rom flashing is your oyster :) .

there are hundreds of threads on here about different roms and how to install with clockwork mod so i would just play with the ones you like the look of until you are happy, remember to always back up a good rom in clockwork mod recovery before you play with a new one.

good luck
