Guest nfh Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Hi, I have a rooted ZTE Blade with the Japanese Jellyfish RLS9 ROM. I added a few lines to the /system/etc/hosts file (using adb to pull and push the file from and to the phone), but the phone doesn't seem to be using it for anything. I checked the hosts file with the nano editor in order to find any invalid character (like ^M), but the file is clean. I tried to ping the custom addresses that I added to the file, but the Blade can't resolve them. For example, I added this line: 62.169.66.39 sip.optimus.pt put if I ping sip.optimus.pt I get the "ping: unknown host sip.optimus.pt" error message. What am I doing wrong?
Guest wbaw Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 No idea what you could be doing wrong, but it always works for me.
Guest nfh Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Are you able to ping custom addresses, or to perform nslookup? I can't use both commands, they both don't resolve the names that are part of the hosts file.
Guest nfh Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Ok, I realized what was wrong: it seems that the nano editor was missing some bad characters that the Windows editor added to the file. I edited the hosts file directly on my Android using the vi editor and now it is working as expected.
