Guest Telltale Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 (edited) I recently bought the orange san francisco and when I got it home it refused to turn on, so I thought that I must charge it first. I've now charged it for at least 24 hours and it still won't turn on. When it's plugged in to the charger the back button glows red so I assume that means it is charging, however it has not turned green at all. Also it will turn on while the charge is plugged in however it constantly just reboots (ie it just shows the android logo, then the orange animation and then restarts). If I try pressing any of the buttons at the end of this it does vibrate and will show the welcome screen very briefly, which at first said "charged" and now has changed back to "3% charge". However if I try to turn it on without the charging cable in the phone will not respond at all. If it's something simple that I've missed then any help would be more than welcome, otherwise I'll just have to return it and get a new one. Edited July 26, 2011 by Telltale

Take It back to the Orange Store and get another one.

Guest Jekle Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Ok thankyou, i'll take it back then. Is this a well known problem? This thing has appeared on the forum before. I suppose it is a well-known problem. Did you get another one? :)
Guest Telltale Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Yeah I took it back to Argos and they replaced it after confirming it wasn't working. Just realised I accidentally kept the memory card from the old phone as well but hey, nothing wrong with having spares. Just going to look into rooting it now, which ROM would you recommend starting with? I've hard Ginger Stir-Fry or CyanogenMod are currently the best so I'll probably try one of them first.

Ginger Stir Fry IS proberly your best bet. :)
Guest Atomix86 Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Ginger Stir Fry IS proberly your best bet. :) +1. Definitely pick that over CM.
Guest Telltale Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) Ok i'll go for GSF then, first things first though I've never used android before and I'm having problems. I want to install the "Ask mr pigfish" app to make sure I have gen 2 but when I search for it on the orange market app it doesn't appear, so I tried going on market.android.com and downloading it there but it said that no phones were linked to my google account. How would I go about linking my phone to my google account? I tried going to settings>accounts and did that but I still get the same message on the market. Edit: Just realised I've been using the "Orange Store" app rather than the "Market" app; will try the market app now and see if that works. Damn Orange and their unnecessary branding. Guest Telltale Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Ok that worked, i'm now connected up properly and installed Pigfish. Apparently my phone is actually Gen1. Should I upgrade to Gen2 then and what are the advantages?
Guest AdwiL Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 The only advantage is that you can use newer ROMS (Cyan and Ginger are for Gen2 ONLY!). as wbaw wrote in his Ginger Stir Fry topic: (http://android.modaco.com/topic/342009-romgen2zte-gingerbread-ginger-stir-fry/) Gen1 to Gen2 All-in-one custom rom upgrade TPT This is an all in one rom + gen2 radio firmware + clockworkmod install for 'Gen1' ZTE Blades & Orange San Franciscos which were sold with Android 2.1 (Eclair). It will upgrade your phone to Gen2 radio firmware, install the rom & the latest ClockworkMod all in one step, even on unrooted phones. To install: Unzip the file to the root of your sdcard, it will create an 'image' folder. Check the integrity of the files using AFV (available from android market) to find the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory, then long press on it & verify nandroid backup. Turn off your phone, leave it for at least 30 seconds, then hold menu & volume + when you power it on. You should see some green text (may be just a blank screen) then it should reboot & you should see a big android while it is performing it's first boot (this will take a while). Once it has successfully started up don't forget to delete the image folder on your sd card, to prevent any accidents. You need to use TPT upgrade only ONCE and then flash ROMs which are for gen2 There is a link in this topic to b15 tpt upgrade, but you should wait for b16 (it's out, but wbaw hasn't uploaded tpt version yet)
Guest Chocolate Columbo Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 +1. Definitely pick that over CM. Any particular reason as to why picking Ginger Stir Fry over CM?
Guest TouchyAndalou Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 Any particular reason as to why picking Ginger Stir Fry over CM? It's the more stable of the two, and also closer to stock which is a good place to start if you're new to Android.
Guest Atomix86 Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Looks like a certain CM fanboy is on the ragepath again...
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Flash a rom Do a nandroid backup in clock Flash the second one If you don't like the second rom restore the first one.
