The other 112MB is used up by the OS itself. You most likely do have 512MB RAM, but you only see 400MB.

All phones have two O/S's on them. One for the radio the other the OS the user uses(andoid, iOS, etc). The radio O/S is for the generic telecom hardware. What happens is that the ram is split between the to O/S's. So while the device has 512mb in it a small part is dedicated to the non user radio OS.

A "small part"? After a fresh reboot, my memory displays 267MB out of 419MB Doesn't that mean that 245, nearly half is gone before I've seen it? I've always accepted that it has gone to the operating functionality and that it's standard, but I would have considered it a large part.

The reason that the available Ram falls even lower is that the applications running take up system memory .. so the more apps you have installed, running, backgrounding, updating & syncing the less available .. especially after a reboot - many apps like Google Maps will auto-start, taking up Ram. Use a good task manager like advanced task killer to retrieve some working memory

Naturally, I would agree, however as I said; almost half of my RAM is taken before I unlock the phone from its bootup. That number only seems to decrease in time and basic use. I.e, if I rebooted the phone, used it briefly then left it, it would appear as something like 205 out of 419MB. Running services says that I'm using 79.3MB of RAM. Even from that my "current" available RAM is 205MB out of 419 (At 8:00pm GMT at least). So am I right in thinking that 205MB + 79.3MB is my total usage outside of the operating system? That equates to 284.3MB. Leaving something like 228MB; still, almost half is being used by the OS, correct?

I don't actually have Google Maps in this instance, though I often do. I flash often you see. I would assume that it would be a good idea to see what is starting up and prevent them from starting up if I rarely use them and would like to averagely see a nice performance boost until I "rarely open" some applications again. Correct? How would I achieve that without a task killer?

I suppose another question is that I shouldn't even need to worry about RAM, since what needs to be closed by the OS, is halted automatically, but I can't help but feel that open tasks are slowing down my phone. Upon closing them by force, the phone speeds up. Does this not mean that I would benefit from a task killer until I need to start that "rarely used" resource heavy app again?
