Guest EinarD Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Hi. My blade has started to make scratching sounds during conversation, and I presume the speaker has taken one too many blows from falling. I've decided to get a new phone, however I still see some use of my blade. I want to use it as a dedicated music player, so I want GSM to be disabled to make it more streamlined and to save power. Yet with WIFI/BT/Radio for the rest of the android functionallity. Basicly I want this: CM / Styr Fry mod with GSM/Networks disabled, and everything else enabled. The result would be a small mp3 player with roughly 50 hours (by own measurement) music playing and I'd estimate 5-7 days standby time if wifi is inactive when screen is of. Plus an extra alarmclock at my bedroom :P I'd call it pretty decent use of broken phone. With an SD upgrade it's a pretty cheap and good alternative to a iPod touch - even if you baught a brand new blade.
Guest hedgepigdaniel Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 go to settings and disable network. simple.
Guest EinarD Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 (edited) go to settings and disable network. simple. Simple, but I can't find any option for disabling it on my phone. I can disable it by using flight mode, but then I'd lose wifi and bt too. For reference, using a CM7 nightly - and it's in norwegian if language translation can remove any options from the settings. Guest flshg Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Use it without a sim card would be better, I would imagine it would switch off the radio completely thus saving battery. I guess you could also somehow remove a lot of redundant apps (dialler, contacts, gmail, market, maps), and use some of the space on internal nand as more storage for favourite mp3s/videos, though not sure if that would be possible.

Yeah I think Dialer and contacts would be okay to move in this case. I'd keep Market to download MP3 apps I guess and other music related things and maybe games. See here for what can be removed. I'm not sure about the internal nand either.

Removing sim doesn't disable it completely, because you can make emergency calls. And even if it's inactive then you got the icon on the status bar. Of course if GSM/Networks was disabled, you wouldn't need a simcard either. A stripped down version is also possible (no dialer etc), but i wouldnt remove market. Incase you want ie MyTracks for gps tracking while you're training and listening to your music, or angry birds while on the bus or whatever. A few other things that could be useful for such a mod is: A form of CPU throttle for music playing - with proper presetsSome sort of idle/hibernate mod or faster boots. So it takes seconds to turn the phone on, rather than a minute or two (atleast cm feels slow for me)
Guest EinarD Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 k0zmic: I Mobile networks settings I have these options: -Data active -Data roaming -National data roaming -2g only mode With sub menus for accesspoint and network provider.
Guest k0zmic Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Try untick Mobile Active. That should disable Mobile Internet but still allows calls i.e. GSM. On airplane mode you can have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and GPS Enabled
Guest Yuccaman Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 On airplane mode you can have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and GPS Enabled Download Airplane Mode Wi-Fi from the Market. In the advanced settings you can set the Blade to allow Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Airplane Mode.
Guest ThermalDroid Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Rip out any apks you don't like from the system folder, or learn to make a ROM?;)
Guest targetbsp Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 (edited) Turn on airplane mode, then turn on wifi/bt/whatever. I often game using such a configuration in the early hours of the morning when I don't want to be disturbed by calls. Edited July 31, 2011 by targetbsp
Guest EinarD Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Thanks for the tip on airplane mode, I never tried re-enabling wifi after having turned it on. It does indeed work. However, it still like to know if / how I can disable mobile functionalities and options. Ie not compiling them in, ripping away the akp, disabling gsm driver or whatever is needed. So I can actually use airplane mode for takeoff/landing. ThermalDroid, I'll do both when I find out how to achieve the gsm disabling. I've tried to read around (read: I googled it) and couldn't find anything on the subject. Which means I didn't know where to start, except making this thread.

Since Airplane mode works for you, there is a easier way you can make a "fake" airplane mode. Set up a task in Tasker to disable GPS, Bluetooth and Wifi and another one to turn it on again, it will be much easier than doing it manually. You don't actually need to disable anything whilst the plane is taking off, legally you should, however it will not disrupt the plane if you leave them on and has been proven many times before it is instead to make sure everyone is ready in case the "brace" command needs to be shouted. I would also recommend underclocking the phone to the lowest frequency that keeps it usable, turning off animations as well should help you achieve a low clock speed with good usability.
Guest Michealtbh Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Open your dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* tap phone information then turn off radio
Guest EinarD Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 Open your dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* tap phone information then turn off radio Also only enables airplane mode :) Okay, thanks for the help everyone. Airplone mode it is then since nobody could tell me if it was possible to disable radio completely.

Not knowing too much about it but the radio functions will be part of the ROM maybe you can compile one and remove what you no longer need.

Airplone mode it is then since nobody could tell me if it was possible to disable radio completely. Airplane mode does disable the radio completely. There is something you can do with sqllite to enable bt and wifi in airplane mode though.
Guest lstarsun Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 but this MP3 player is a little heavy...isn't it...
Guest Priyansh Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Am I the only one facing this problem?? Why does the audio quality on my blade is so bad.. I have tried many headphones/earphones which sounds good with other mobiles.. :(
Guest rbbrslmn Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 the problem is of course the volume.... its only really usable with 16ohm headphones but they pick up some interference. however. theres another solution, at the moment I'm using it with klipsh s1 headphones, and a fiio e3 headphone amplifier. its still far from perfect, but its better. that said I dont think this phone is good enough to use solely as an mp3 player.
Guest ColdEmbrace Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Not at all I owned a archos 43 vision and it weighed more
