Hey,

I have a question, would you lot think its a good idea or bad idea for my sister to buy the blade now? i already have a blade (got in sep 2010) and now she was wondering whether she should buy one or buy something else like a blackberry 9300 or the monte carlo etc. her phone at the moment is old and she wants a better one like mine but isnt sure whether buying a blade is worth it or not as its been out for a while.

Thanks for your help!

It was easier last year, it was a bargain and had a oled screen. I would probably wait for the Monte Carlo and get that instead, as its superior to the blade in almost every way, and only £35 more.

What about the discount for existing PAYG customers on the Blade? Do Orange do that for all phones does anyone know or is a promotion specific to this model? For a £35 difference the Skate would be tempting but at £85 vs £150 I think I'd have the Blade myself.

You pretty much only have to know someone* who has been an Orange customer in the past though. I had my Dad order one and deliver to my address rather than his and they had no problem doing it.

*Well enough that they'll buy you a phone if you give them the money!

Did you keep it on orange though or unlock it straight away? I think you have to have topped up on the account at least once to get the offer - which rules out most San Fran owners as far as I can tell lol. :D

Anyway if you do have a valid orange account, there's discussion here on the number to call and stuff to get it cheap: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/orange-san-francisco-74-99-including-10-top-up-orange/924331 (note that I think the £75 inc credit being discussed was a temporary offer at the time and it's usually £85 inc credit)

Like I say though, there's always the chance that the Skate will have a similar offer? I dunno.

Yeah im still on orange, although i was seriously gonna change but then didnt ot of laziness lol

Thanks for the link, i'll keep that number just in case she wants the blade and if not she could always wait till the skates out and if the offers not avaible she'll defo get blade then so i hope the discount works till then! thank u i appreciate it :)

edit: the only thing is that i had my o2 number transferred to my blade when i got it so now my phone number is not actually oranges, does that make a diff, i still use the old orange number to log in to my account etc.

It's funny how that's exactly 100% my situation only that I got my blade at Christmas. After some persuading she's going to get a blade as well since Blackberries aren't good value for money and all the androids are too expensive. It could be worth waiting for Monte Carlo for your self and give her your blade. Or wait for the bkade to drop price as a result of the MC release.

If I were you, I'd sell my Blade to my sister, and buy a Skate (Monte Carlo) for myself.

IMHO the Skate is way too big for women.

My phone died days ago and I got a San Francisco last Saturday at an Orange store in Camberley for 95 pounds then used my phone fund of 2.50 pounds bringing it down to 92.50 pounds. Its the best deal I can find on the San Francisco at the time and I am happy with my purchase. I was actually waiting for the Monte Carlo but after learning that the cheapest ZTE Skate without the Orange branding costs 250 pounds, I doubt they will sell it for less than 150 pounds. Anyway, it will take over a month for the Monte Carlo to be released then additional weeks to have full community support on it so I guess getting the San Francisco last Saturday isn't too bad since I need a mobile phone.

Actually, they are selling it for a penny less than that. :D It's 139.99 + £10 credit

The Blade will do everything today that it did six months ago, if it does what you need it to do why not buy it?

If you only ever buy the 'latest' technology you'll never be happy because there will always be something else better/faster/shinier just around the corner.

Unless the Monte Carlo has a better camera quality, screen like the OLED (i know it's not one), and the lag issues (with some games) are fixed which can't see why not then might as well get the blade save some money. Will have wait and see how they are when there out next month hopefully.

The blade/ san francisco still looks like the best value android handset to me. It might change later in the year (if another manufacturer can compete), but I'm not sure. Skate looks a bit too big, ugly & not much of an upgrade from a blade to me, and it's not even for sale yet.

Get it now. I have a blade , it's much better than most other smartphones. Blackberries - prone to hardware failure / short battery life.

iPhone - Overpriced and prone to signal dropping

Another reason why to get the blade is that the ROMs can be changed easily, if she wanted to change the ROM. I've changed my ROM 2 times , worked a treat for both!

I'm still recommending the blade to anyone that asks me. For the price, I don't think there is a better phone available. There are a large number or ROMs available and changing them is a relatively easy task. It is the best phone I've owned and for around £100, you can't really go wrong.

If she wants BBM then get a blackberry (the 8520 is cheap and fine but the 9300 is pretty good but expensive really)

If not then get a OSF, unlock it, and flash to a new ROM. Then pick your PAYG sim (or sim only deal)

I prefer the BB QWERTY keypad and its simplicity but YMMV

If I was in her position, I'd rather wait for the ZTE Skate to become available and either get that, or get your Blade after you get the Skate (or heck, sell your own Blade if you can and get the Skate for the both of you)..

Of course it all depends on how costly the Skate will be, but I think the raised price tag won't be much higher than the Blade (that is, if Orange decides to raise it's price tag in the first place to such levels where it would be too high to justify).

As good as the Blade is, it's hardware is sorely out of date, and getting a good budget smartphone (which is bound to be better than the Blade) with 1Ghz cou would be a lot better.
