ZTEBlade keyboard Apps

Hi All,

I have just bought my first Android, a new unlocked Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade). There is no predictive text keyboard on it so I apparently need to download a 'Touch Pal' App.

When I went to download this it asked 'Permission' and on reading this it asked for all kinds of access - personal date, contacts etc.I am pretty worried that I am giving some organisation I dont know access to my data now and forever?

Im new to this Apps world - should I be worried? Any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks

David

You are right to be cautious. If you are paranoid like me, you can exert some control over what your apps can and cant do.

First root your phone if not already done.

Install lbe security from market. This app allows you to allow/deny permissions on all apps.

Download and install droidwall from market. This allows you to block internet access on apps. Although this is partially redundant due to lbe security also having this ability, droidwall can deny access to internet for lbe security, just so lbe security doesnt have outright power :)

Different keyboards have different permissions requirements. Just deny all unnecessary permissions to keyboards as above and you can sleep sound at night, but you'll lose some functionality, e.g. keyboard cant use words from your sms texts, contacts names etc to help with prediction.
