Remeber contact joins after flashing new ROM

Hi guys,

I manually join many of my contacts with corresponding facebook contacts manually as they have different names (so they don't sync/join automatically).

This is fine if I have to do it once. But, whenever I flash a new ROM all these contacts get separated again and I have to join them manually again!

Is there a permanent solution for this?

Thanks for help :)

I'm sorry I don't have a solution but how do I join the contacts manually?

To join contacts manually you press menu to edit the contact, then press menu again and the join option appears.

I too join many manually for the same reason as yourself, however I have experienced none of the problems you mention when flashing new roms?

I thought the google backup was meant to to automatically resynchronise your contacts etc every time you run a new rom for the first time?

If not do you use titanium backup? I do, and it could therefore be partly due to the fact that all my contacts and also apps (the facebook apps data) are backed up and restored.

I have titanium but I don't use it to restore system apps. I think google should remember contact joins. But it doesn't. :(

This can be done for google contacts. But, I also join many facebook, twitter and google contacts manually. I'm not sure you can join facebook and twitter contact with google on gmail page.

As far as I know you can't do it. (Which is annoying I agree)

It would be simple to implement though.. HTC's Sense does a good job of it by adding a snippet to the notes field something like:

<HTCData><Facebook>id:64536643/friendof:654643654</Facebook><Flickr>id:64536543@N08/friendof:65463564@N08</Flickr></HTCData>

(I've anonymised the numbers here)

Which is used to re-link the contacts.. Google could easily implement this however they dont actually seem to care about making contacts better (which is strange for a company who make a MOBILE PHONE OS) as they havent even bothered to do a lot of the basics of an address book system yet.

Maybe a third party contacts app supports reading this HTC style data or creating its own? Someone might know of one that does.

The best you can do with the stock app is edit your contacts in such a way that the phone can try and join them automatically.. this is easy enough if your facebook friends all use thier real names and have phone numbers, as if you make your google contacts have a full name (instead of say just a forename for people you ring all the time or family) then it can match them up itself (it seems to use a phone number if available as a confirmation to link them.. so make sure they are in the same format as the facebook ones friends have entered for example in the UK people use either 074316512 or +44 74316512 (fake numbers agin) which is the same number, but the difference in style throws the sync off ive found if it cant use something else as a match (email for example).

Another tip is to check that you add all the emails for google contacts.. like if they have a hotmail, home email and workj one.. add all three as they may not use the normal one on facebook or twitter and it will help to match them.)

Thanks for the tips mate. It's really shocking how google have ignored contacts feature. It doesn't even have a birthday field!

You can add Birthdays for Contacts on the web based Google Contacts: www.google.com/contacts (sign in with the same account you use on the phone), which DO get synchronised to the phone, just they go into the calandar application not the actual contact.. Which as you say is just stupid.

Android could be so much better if google just improved on things like this instead of going off making crazy new apps like goggles etc.. (which are great.. but not core apps) - I cant imagine it owuld take a Googler long to program that sort of feature..
