Guest rbnfrance Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Hi, I have just got a ZTE-U V880 as my first android phone and I’m having loads of trouble. I live in China, and have managed to change the language to English but all the apps are in chinese and need to be replaced. There is no Market app, and when I install the APK file of the latest version it doesn’t work. Appbrain doesn’t seem to work either. I would quite like to wipe the whole thing and replace it with a new ROM. I got quite far through the guide for a gen 2 device, but when I get to ‘Install new firmware’ it says ‘error you need to install a custom recovery before you can install a new firmware’. I checked that the recovery file was correct (recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-blade-g2.img) and rechecked it with Astro to check the code was right. I reinstalled it after downloading it again, but the phone says ‘unrecognised image installed’ or something similar. I realise this means the recovery isn’t working, but I really need this or my phone is almost unusable and I can’t get any more apps! Any suggestions? Robin
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Power up your phone with vol - pressed to enter manually in clockworkmod Flash your rom in clockwork Menu install zip from sd card
Guest rbnfrance Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Power up your phone with vol - pressed to enter manually in clockworkmod Flash your rom in clockwork Menu install zip from sd card Hi Phoenix, Thanks for the input. I tried to power into clockwork mod manually, but booting up with vol - pressed just crashes the phone. It just gets stuck on the loading screen. I don't think that version of clockwork mod is working with my phone. I checked that it is the right file as specified by the guide, but it gives me the message 'unrecognised recovery image'.

Guest KonstaT Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 When you get that recovery installed you should know that there are only two custom ROMs supporting screen type used in ZTE-U V880. Latest CM7 nightlies (145+) and Triple Two Project.

Guest KonstaT Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Fantastic, thanks. Which ROM would you suggest out of those two? I'm a bit biased to answer that because the Triple Two is my own project. ;) Another one is gingerbread (CM7) and another one is froyo so can't compare them in same standards anyway.

Hi, There has been some progress! I started to follow the instructions for using fastboot, but when i got to the stage about rebooting with vol + pressed, it just boots as normally, I googled it, and someone said to try holding vol - key instead, and that does something, but does not take me to android screed, just loads something called 'cwm-based recovery v4.0.1.4' I am guessing that is clockworkmod 4.0.1.4! can I install zip from simcard with this? Also, I'm installing your Triple Two. What does it mean "wipe before install"? Edited August 4, 2011 by rbnfrance

There's two options in the Clockwork Mod, 'wipe data/factory reset' 'wipe cache' Those two (order does not matter) need to be performed in order to do a wipe. Otherwise existing settings could clash with the ROM as it will pick that up and force close errors will appear. Then to install, again from the Clockwork Mod menu, 'Install zip from sdcard', 'choose zip from sdcard', now scroll to the appropriate directory/file that you want to install and select 'yes' to confirm. It will take a minute at the most and then select 'reboot system now'.
