Motorola dials up Linux for mobile handsets

Motorola, the world's #2 maker of mobile phones, today released its first Linux-based handset. More importantly, Motorola tipped its long-term smart phone strategy, saying that the model A760 "is Motorola’s first handset demonstrating the company’s commitment to making the Linux operating system a key pillar of its handset software strategy."

The selection is a significant nod for Linux, given that Motorola currently holds 19 percent of the worldwide handset market. Motorola is currently a user of Symbian, which is the market leader as a mobile software platform.

Microsoft has been working to make inroads into that market with its own platform, called Smartphone. Handset makers using Smartphone are Samsung and TCL Mobile, and Taiwan's High Tech Computer, which designed the Orange SPV that's deployed in England.
