Keeping the phone in a metal box - harmful?

I'm thinking about keeping my phone in a locked metal box on certain occasions. No need getting into why I'm doing this... I'm just wondering if it could damage the phone?

I'm not turning it off but putting it in flight mode. What could be damaged, compass, GPS or is it safe?

It could overheat, depending on how well ventilated this metal box is. You should probably just turn it off, I can't imagine why you'd put your phone in a locked metal box & want it turned on while it's in there. It wont get any radio signals at all in a metal box, so turn gps off too at least.

Ok, not turning it of is just cause I don't usually do that. But why should it overheat? It'll be in flight mode and standby.

It will be fine. It probably gets warmer in your pocket than just sitting idle in a metal box.

Ok, not turning it of is just cause I don't usually do that. But why should it overheat? It'll be in flight mode and standby.

The only thing I can think of is if you don't turn off the radios it is likely to spend a lot of time hunting for a signal which it won't find and so it will consume more power than usual. But as long as you put it in flight mode (or turn it off) it'll be fine :)

It should be fine as long as its not too small. After all, a cars a metal box.

Maybe he works/visits somewhere where phones are banned in certain parts of the premises, thus requiring the phone to be stored somewhere secure.....like a locked metal box in reception etc.
