Guest phil8715 Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 My brother in law bought an Archos 101 from CPW which has dropped from £299.99 to £149.99. http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/ARCHOS-101-INTERNET-TABLET/?src=phoneFinder&tariffNetworks=&clearance=false Would this be considered as a rival to the Vega?
Guest Minimonkey Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Not really only 256 mb ram and not dual core the hannspree could be rival as the new model (53) has a better screen than the vega

I had the Archos 70 and it was the exact same hardware spec except only 7" screen. Couldn't play a lot of stuff that I can on the Archos. One note: The offer says SIM FREE; thats because it doesn't actually have a sim card slot....

The item was bought for my brother (Phil8715's brother in law) as he only really wants to use it for watching Iplayer, ITV player and the Channel 4 and Channel 5 equivalents. He wanted something with a large screen, not to heavy to carry around, and would work on wi-fi. He has medical problems, so rooting, modding, etc would be way beyond him. He wants to switch on, press the icon, find the programme and play it. For him, this fits the bill perfectly.

For anyone considering buying the Archos 101 I should point out that rooting it (even with the Android SDK) invalidates your guarantee. Also, you will be stuck with with Android 2.2 (Froyo) with no hope of updating. On the other hand, if you're content with what it does out of the box, and with what apps you can squeeze on it, at £150 it's a good piece of kit. I've got the 7" version (Archos 70) with the 250GB hard drive built-in which I bought so that I can carry my entire music collection around with me and I've never regretted buying it.

I did find a market apk and installed it. He now has the full Android Market.
