New to Android and Advent Vega, Help!

Hey everyone, I purchased an Advent Vega today from Currys and am really happy with it so far: looks great, handles well etc etc.

However, I really want to make the device a USB Host so my girlfriend and I can plug in our external hard drive and watch movies off it when we're away. Also, I'd like a Flash player that could potentially stream live sports. The one I'm using right now doesn't seem to be able to. I used the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931337 to install Android marketplace but this isn't thorough enough for me to be able to manipulate the USB settings etc.

Do I need to reboot the device to factory settings if I want to install the Modaco R8 pack or can I just do it over this one? I am completely new to all of this and to be honest find the whole idea of going into command line etc quite intimidating. I really don't want to end up paying £200 for a device I brick on opening weekend! How easy is this to do for someone who is really not PC literate?

Installing Modaco R8 will wipe the existing rom anyway, your best bet would be to install the Corvus 5 rom though, it has a few extra bits built in for usb host mode and plays flash well.

Forget that mate, figured it out re: the USB driver. Works well with Moboplayer! This is great!

Now just need to fix my Wifi as it just comes up "error" and can't get online. I'm assuming there's an easy fix for this. Then it's just flash player and I am sorted!

Hiya, well having a wifi error after installing a custom rom to me means something has gone wrong with the install, because i have never had any problems with errors after installing any rom from here, you are using Corvus5 yes???

Did you wipe the cache partition, wipe the data/factory reset and wipe the dalvik cache???? before you installed the custom rom, if not then this is my guess to the error you are getting.

I hope you did a backup of your stock rom that was installed when you bought the vega before you did the custom rom install, if not then you will need to reflash the stock rom and follow the instructions from this link and go to number 6 and follow the rest of the procedure.

If you needed to reflash the stock rom then you won't have recovery aka clockworkmod installed, i suggest you read thru all the points to getting recovery installed on the vega.

Also, don't forget to install the SP1 update for Corvus5, includes some addons, to do this, download the sp1 update and copy to your sdcard, run the recovery app from your vega and it will reboot you to clockworkmod, tab down to install zip from sdcard, and then tab to choose zip from sdcard, then tab down to the corvus5 sp1 zip and install, once done back button to main screen and reboot the vega, SP1 update has app launchers to run USB in HOST and Slave modes in the apps main page.

Sorry, I have real difficulty understanding what's being asked of me. Flash the rom? I don't get it.

I figure I need to restore the device to factory settings and then reinstall the Corvus rom from scratch. However, when I try to do this by holding power for 6 seconds, back for 2 seconds etc in line with the instructions here http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/full_system_flash_instructions.pdf Windows prompts me for the driver but does not give me the chance to actually direct them to where it is (a folder called Vega on my desktop). It just searches and then says it's failed as I have no APX disk or whatever.

In Device Manager there is no APX option or a yellow triangle. The only ones I see related to the Vega are under "portable devices" it says "Tegra 2" and under "imaging devices" it says "Vega USB 2.0 Camera". Nothing whatsoever saying APX.

Then you're not in recovery. Do you know that in recovery, you will see nothing on the Vega screen, not even the backlight. If the backlight comes on, you've missed it so power off and try again. Use YAUDIG or AUDI to install the correct drivers once in recovery.

Okay thanks, I updated the USB driver. I'm following the guide at http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/full_system_flash_instructions.pdf, I have no idea what YAUDIG or AUDI are lol. I am at the stage where a DOS window appears but it just says "USB Device not found, please press enter" even though the device is hooked up via. USB. When I press enter, the DOS window disappears and I'm back where I was.

I presume you have already got the stock rom reinstalled onto your vega??? before you look at retrying a custom rom.

No I don't have the stock rom reinstalled. This is my issue. My situation has not changed from when I installed this Corvus 5 ROM that does pretty much what I need it to but has wiped out my Wifi. Hi, you can't just turn off the vega and expect it to install the stock rom when you run it, doen't work like that.

It needs to be put into flash recovery mode, to do this connect your PC to your vega with the vega switched off, i assume you have windows sounds enabled, if so turn the volume up to assist next step.

Now, with the vega off, hold the back button for 2 seconds, then holding the back button hold the power button for 2 seconds (you should here the usb deviced connected to PC windows sound) now let go of the power button then back button, this is all done quite quickly, if you don't here the sound from windows and see a back light come on, you've done it wrong, retry.

To tell if the vega is in flash mode, screen will be blank, the windows sound will have chimed, and if you tilt the vega so the camera at the top is away from you, you will see a blue light near the camera, that's nvflash mode, run the stock rom, watch the code text start to fly on the screen, the vega will power off when complete, then reboot and make sure the vega is back up and running on stock rom, also check your wifi is working as i read in another post someone had a faulty vega with wifi not working properly too, if so, then follow my instructions to install the recovery app and backup and install a custom rom from the link i gave in a previous post in this topic.

Okay, so I am back to factory settings. Thanks for everyone's help. It took a while but I got there in the end.

Now, so if I reinstall the Corvus ROM I had running before it's less likely to wipe out my Wifi this time? Right?

First, how are you installing Corvus 5, i presume you are using recovery app that when run puts you into clockworkmod????

If not read my instructions please as it will give you advice on how to do a backup of the stock rom with recovery installed if you followed my instructions, which can then be used if something goes wrong with your new attempt, no need to nvflash recover as your backup is your basis to install a new rom.

Also, make sure you don't just run recovery (clockworkmod) and install the zip ontop of the stock rom, you must wipe the cache partiton, wipe the data/factory reset and in advanced wipe the dalvik cache, then install the corvus5 zip rom, which is all explained in the link i provided above, the post says about installing modaco R8, but substitute the R8 with Corvus5, everything else stays the same.

Hope this helps and Good Luck, just installed Corvus5 myself and now doing a backup of it incase something messes up, all in all i have a stock rom backup with recovery, modaco R8 with aload of apps/changes/settings backup and now a Corvus5 backup with nothing on except the SP1 update for Corvus5 rom (SP1 update is installed once corvus5 is installed and running, run recovery app from vega to get into clockworkmod) tab to install zip from sdcard, tab to choose zip from sdcard then tab to the SP1 updater, that you should have downloaded to your sdcard when you grabbed corvus5 rom)

Well the way you installed corvus5 explains alot, that's not the way to install a custom rom and i am suprised it was just the wifi not working and not a whole load more problems.

I put an easy write up to explain how to install a custom rom with vega tools and the steps to install the drivers.

1) Download Corvus5 rom and the sp1 updater and copy this to your sdcard via your PC (connect the vega to PC, select on vega to turn on USB and then find the mounted sdcard on your pc and copy the zip files to the sdcard), once done, download Vega Tools 4 and install that onto your PC, then put your vega into debug mode, that's settings, applications, development and then select the top USB Debugging.

2) Run vega tools and look at bottom of screen and click install audi drivers.

3) Don't select anything and click next step at bottom of screen, then select Part B, deleted all installed drivers, once done, now select the the top option "i want to install modaco R8 in ADB mode"

4) Click next step and select Part C, Install correct driver, then select top option "just do it for me", this should install the correct ADB driver, if installed correctly the bar at bottom left of window which was red should now be green.

5) Once done close down the window and look on the vega tools window and see the clockwork recovery, tick the include recovery application and click the install button to install, (if this will not install, reboot the vega, making sure you have the vega in debug mode as explained above when you reboot and try again) once done, go to your apps page and look for recovery, run the app and it will reboot into Recovery option called clockworkmod.

It's working nicely, very nicely in fact. The only issue I'm having is that I want to put SP1 on but the Recovery app has disappeared when I installed Corvus onto the tablet. It's possible it's just not on the homescreen. Where can I find it? Do I go back through Vega Tools?

Hiya bud, thanks for the comment and glad it worked for you, to get recovery back on, turn on usb debugging and install it from vega tools as you did when you had the stock rom on, then follow my instructions how to install sp1 (same as installing corvus 5 really)

For some reason recovery app isn't installed when the corvus5 rom is installed.

Also, once you have installed the sp1 updater, when in usb debugging mode on the vega, you can install custom boot animations from vega tools, have a look at them, they look really cool (running the bubble one myself), just select the one you want and click install, if that doesn't work, try reboot the vega and retry.

I just tried as I was planning on streaming Summerslam tonight (sad I know) but it comes up just random letters and numbers in the space on the page where the video is embedded.

Okay, so I finally got all of this working and now the Vega does everything I wanted it to when I purchased it. Very happy with the device.

7) Now tab down to install zip from sdcard, select, and tab down to choose zip from sdcard, select and tab to the corvus5 zip file on your sdcard and select (not the sp1 updater), tab to yes and this should start the install of the new rom, once done, press back and select reboot the vega and you should have corvus5 installed.

Once installed and check to make sure wifi etc works, run the recovery app again and boot back into clockworkmod, redo number 7 on list above but this time select the SP1 Updater and install, back button to the main screen and reboot, once you have rebooted again check things work, if happy and want a backup of this corvus5 rom in this state, then run recovery, tab down to backup and restore and backup this rom too, which should give you 2 backups if you followed correct, one at the top will be stock rom backup with recovery and second will be corvus5 sp1 backup.
