Is it possible to reassign the hardware buttons

I'm going to do a project where I make a blade into a built in satnav for a car. Would it be possible to change the hardware buttons. Idealy I would need to turn the home button into the on/off switch, though I am unsure if you could do this with the phone turned off?

Not per software i think, you could wake the phone but not as real power button.

Not 100% sure but remapping should only work when the phone is on.

I do not think this can be done in respect to the power button, but yes, volume keys, menu/home/back key can be reassigned.

If you do not want to keep pressing the power button, then the simplest solution would be to look around for a program that prevents the handset from sleeping - mind you - this will drain the battery like you've never seen before!

Am sure its an easy little java project - to acquire a wakelock and use it to periodically keep the screen on all the time - use stackoverflow.com for resources on how to do it :)
