Wanting to flash to 2.3.4

Hi, im not really sure what to do. I want to flash my Samsung Galaxy S2 to 2.3.4 or a custom 2.3.4 Rom, as I want to improve my phone please. I have already looked around and find it a bit confusing what to read and how to get the best out of my phone. I have done it with my San Francisco before so I have a good idea, but as said don't know what's best. I also want to backup everything before I do anything, so would be great if I knew how, as I have forgot. Thanks.
