More and more iOS game developers are starting to produce games for Android devices which just shows how popular Android has become over the years. Spirit is a hugely popular title for iOS devices and now Android users can have the chance to play.

At first Spirit looks like a clone of the hugely popular Geometry Wars but it's clear once you start playing that it's so much more than that. Instead of using your craft to obliterate the enemy with laser guns, Spirit takes a calmer and more peaceful approach to ridding the world of these nasties by simply sucking them away using vortexes. This certainly seems to be a easier solution to the problem but once you start ripping through the levels you start to realise that it's not so easy to do. Creating a vortex requires you to circle the enemies with your craft and you only have a short amount of time to do this. This can often result in some deadly collisions with the enemies when the swarms get too much. As you progress through the game you will experience different types of enemies some of which will even fire lasers at you just to keep you on your toes.

Graphically the game looks fantastic, taking full advantage of devices with higher resolution screens like the Desire HD. The sound is crisp and sufficiently retro to give you that feeling of playing a game from the 80s, which Spirit is clearly influenced by.

Performance was excellent at all times using my Huawei U8800. There aren't any minimum CPU requirements listed in the Android Market but I should expect the game to run fine on devices such as the ZTE Blade and up.

Spirit is a wonderful game that will give you hours of fun because you will find it quite hard to put down. Recommended!

Spirit HD is available in the Android Market priced at 79p. Link
