Guest ajpepe72 Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Just wondering if android (vegacomb 3.2) would need something similar to windows disc defragmenter and system cleaner used every now and again,or does it not require it ?

Defragmenting is intended for proper rotating hard discs. It takes time for the disc head to move across the disc, and it then has to wait for the disc to spin round to the sector that needs to be accessed. By arranging the files in contigious sectors, the defragmenter reduces the number of times the head has to move track, and that speeds up disc access. Every block of the solid state storage in the Vega can be accessed immediately, so there is no need for defragmenting. Edited August 23, 2011 by lesd

Lesd is absolutely spot on, but it is worth grab something like "system maid" which will clean up the caches. A lot of apps leave crudlets behind and uninstalling apps does not always remove everything (see all the folders on your SD card for examples) and running a cleaner every couple of months or so will reclaim some space for you. Not much you can do about the stuff on the SD card, other than manual deletes. Android is very different to Linux, Windows or OSX. It runs best when it's memory is full (the opposite of the desktop OSes) and despite what anyone might tell you, is best left alone to manage itself - i.e. no task killers. Cache cleaning is one of the few things worth doing - a cache, by definition, is disposable.
