Poor WIFI connection compared to cheap ZTE Blade

I bought the Streak 5 recently.

Stock ROM had poor WIFI compared to the ZTE Blade running CM7. I couldn't get a signal in my room compared to a fair signal on the blade.

I've updated to Streakdroid 1.9.1 with 351 baseband but there are no changes to WIFI.

Are there any known fixes or roms which have a better WIFI connection?

I've never had any trouble with Wifi.. My blade always dropped wifi if used with bluetooth, even if it managed to hold onto the signal the speed dropped staggeringly!

Did you have this problem before using a custom rom? Try re-installing the latest stock fimeware and see if this problem persists

Could be you have a faulty unit :(

I doubt the unit is faulty. Stock rom was also like this so I thought a custom rom with updates would make it better.

WIFI connects perfectly but doesn't have as much range as the blade.

Does anyone know any tweaks or kernal/baseband updates to improve WIFI? A bit sad that the streak doesn't have as much support as for the blade!

My Streak wifi strength is way better than my Blade.

Again I second this..

Unless you've been messing around with AMSS or DSP files or haven't updated to the latest official firmware I don't see why it should be worse than the blade.

Have you tried changing the channels on your wifi unit and/or your Streak?

I've got both a ZTE Blade and a Dell Streak 5 and I've not noticed the Wi-Fi reception being any worse on the Streak.

Any tips on how I could do this?

I haven't done it on the Streak. I do remember seeing a discussion on how to do it several months ago. Do a search on xda (I think). Sorry I can't point you in a more specific location.

As for your wifi router, changing the channel frequency is router specific. I'm in the USA and the att tech showed me how when he set up my dsl service. If I remember correctly, there are 15 available channels and he said all routers are set to channel 1 by default when manufactured. I couldn't get 10 feet away from the router without dropping wifi. After changing channels by trial and error, I found one that had a strong signal throughout my entire house and into my yard.

My router at work can be set to 2.4GHz or 5.xGHz which increases the signal. I can also change channels on it from the prefs menu. I do have wifi analyzer on my Streak and it is set for all channels to help find the strongest one.

Hope this helps. It has been 2 years since I modified my router channels and I don't remember more specifically, as this isn't something I do regularly!

Menu, settings, wifi, wifi settings, advanced, regulatory domain. Then try changing the channels

Though I don't know what effect this may may.

Have you ever flashed any amss or dsp files? Could cause problems.
