Help a newbie?

Hi all,

I received my Optimus 2x today and im very happy with it, however i need a few questions that need answering.

Firstly, is installing a custom rom going to increase the speed of my phone, or is it more optional?

If it is something that needs doing, is there a step by step guide that i can follow to make the process as easy and simple as possible?

Im totally new to all this, and would appreciate any help you all may give :)
