ffmpeg/mencoder commandline to convert for default player

I've tried a bunch of mencoder and ffmpeg commandlines to convert a video for the default player, but no success.. I searched the forum too, but all posts were quite old so I'm creating a new topic for this. Does anyone have a working line I could borrow, thanks! These two encoders are the ones I prefer (1.mencoder 2.ffmpeg) and I wouldn't want to install yet another one just for this.

I know there are other players that can handle all types of formats so don't recommend a one here, ok? There are other threads for those. :)

edit: I finally got encoding to work with ffmpeg using mpeg4 as the codec, but would still like to know if someone's got x264 working. Here's a link to a commandline that's been the only working one so far..
