composing a text message

is there any way of sending a large message without it converting to a multimedia message? find it very annoying and would rather it split the message into pieces

If you install Handcent SMS you can tick (or untick) an option to allow large messages to go via SMS instead of MMS.

Not aware of anything in Stock.
