Guest jevdroid Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 I'm trying to connect my tablet running VegaComb 9n to the Internet. Was hoping to use the 3G connection from my phone (an old HTC Hero running FroydVillain 1.6), but can't get it to work. For security reasons, I want the connection between tablet and phone to be USB based, something that in essence should be possible now that VegaComb provides host mode. Or so I thought. Does anyone know if this is doable?
Guest simonta Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 Nope, you need Froyo, Android 2.2 on the phone.
Guest jevdroid Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) Nope, you need Froyo, Android 2.2 on the phone. Don't let the name of the ROM fool you, FroydVillain 1.6 = froyo. ;). The ROM is based on CM6.1 RC1, thus Android 2.2.1. It provides a USB based tethering option in the network settings that can be used to share its 3G network connection to a wintendo (Vista or Win7) or Linux PC. The problem is that VegaComb recognizes the USB connection but prolly doesn't have the right drivers or USB profiles to handle network communications through it. Edited September 27, 2011 by jevdroid

Ah, sorry, the name did fool me ;) I also doubt that the Vega has drivers (although they are available so a shout out on the kernel source code sticky thread might be worthwhile) and I hear what you say about security but FYI, the Vega tethers just fine using WPA2 which is so far unbreakable to all except the truly determined like guvmint agencies if you don't use a password that can be dictionary attacked and includes non alphanumerics.
Guest jevdroid Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Yeah, I know it should be safe to "tether" through wifi, I just don't like it for some reason. Further more, so far I've not been able to get the hero to run reliably as hotspot, but it works fine through USB connected to a wintendo machine. Now if only the tablet want to play nice... I'll start asking around in the sourcecode thread, thanks for that pointer!
