Guest pedrojaime Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 I have been using Archlinux on an old laptop for a number of years and got the most out of it thanks to posts like this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=88515 With so much software available out on the market, I was thinking it would be a good idea to share information about which apps users have found to work best on our Huawei U8820s with only 100mb RAM available. This is what I use: Music Player: Vanilla Music (104kb download) Video Player: MoboPlayer (3130kb) / Mixzing (3256kb) (I cannot create playlists with mobo for .mp3 files) Password storage: KeePassDroid (996kb) (considering Passkeeper (92kb) (for its size but doubting the security of its storage of information Script Scheduler (66kb) - NOT on Market, get from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558822 Allow you to 'renice' android process priority Quick Boot (Reboot) (34kb) - Adds reboot dialog to Android 2.1 Notification Toggle (186kb) - adds common settings shortcut notification bar for Android 2.1 Autolock (34kb) - adds delayed password lockscreen functionality Fileman (55kb) - fast, basic File manager Ted (Text editor) (78kb) - light text editor Auto Airplane Mode (55kb) - schedule radio on/off Volume Locker (89kb)/ Ringguard (41kb) - prevent accidental volume changes, Volume locker is less obtrusive MyTasks (172kb) - To Do tasks with alarm reminders Calendars: Business Calendar Free (607kb) / Smooth Calendar (195kb) - widget only, displays latest entries of google calendar SD-Booster (218kb) : set different SD cache size Freespace (101kb)/ DiskUsage (145kb): show system free space System App Freezer & Remover [$0.99] (216kb): Root freeze/defrost/uninstall system/any app SetCPU for Root Users [$1.99] (413kb): change CPU speed settings Ghost Commander File Manager (462kb): mount /system as a read-write partition/ general file manager GPS: OsmAnd (2459): GPS navigation. Its not small but the smallest, most functional I could find and can use offline maps! Launchers: home++/Small Home/ dxtop/ ADW/ Go Launcher Ex these are the best I have found. *NOTE that the download size of the applications listed here sometimes varies greatly from the installed size and indeed the memory usage of the app. Zeam Launcher as an example may be a small download and a small installed size but uses more memory than Go Launcher Ex or ADW. Any other useful small apps that I should know about I am curious! Peter
Guest Dr Who Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 What I want to know is are there any good lightweight alternatives to the default browser? I find it eats memory far more than any other app - my phone starts running like a pig at about 15 Mb but pretty much messaging + browser is 15 Mb, whereas messaging + multiple other apps is normally in the range 20-25 Mb. Be good to multi-task with a browser open.
Guest pedrojaime Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 (edited) I have used Ultralight Web browser (92kb) though I am not sure that it uses less memory than the default browser. I am not sure its the most user friendly but it works. Other good alternatives I have found to be decent: Opera Mini (767kb) and Dolphin Mini (1015kb). I need to find out which one uses the least RAM.. This tool is good and light for that purpose: OS Monitor (185kb) Hope it helps. Any good light games anyone..? Guest jafp Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Moto X Mayhem Lite- funny game, the lite version is small https://market.android.com/details?id=com.occamy.android.motoxmayhem1lite&feature=search_result Others apps i enjoy, i think they are light and fast: MyPhoneExplorer- manage your phone by your computer https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fjsoft.myphoneexplorer.client&feature=search_result Battery Solo Widget- Simple battery level indicator https://market.android.com/details?id=net.maicas.android.batterys&hl=en RD Mute- Flip your phone face down to quickly mute https://market.android.com/details?id=com.raidroid.rdmute&feature=search_result
Guest pedrojaime Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 (edited) Very nice! Moto X Mayhem reminds me of Motocross and funky truck games on teagames.com haha MyPhoneExplorer - nice find. As for Battery Solo Widget, I use Batterylife (by curvefish) that looks beautiful and gives you a little bit more information and still very small I use 'Quickpic' for viewing images - very quick in fact. Finally, I must try RD Mute! thanks Edited September 29, 2011 by pedrojaime

Peter strange with cpu monitor Go Launcher Ex is shown as using 23M and Zeam as 20M, but still thanks for pointing out Go Launcher certainly has more features than Zeam.
Guest rulerofkaos Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Finally, I must try RD Mute! thanks I don't need any app to do this on my Pulse, have you tried? I thought it is a stock android feature.
Guest pedrojaime Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Well, I still miss Go Launcher Ex but I do notice that ADW uses far less memory so continuing to test and use it for now though I may go back to Go Launcher Ex. I guess in the end we have to strike a balance between speed, functionality and eye candy! I do not notice the mute functionality by default on Andriod 2.1 (using FTB ROM), maybe this comes in a newer version of the OS?? I am retesting since I have 'frozen' a number of system services and this could be breaking this functionality here.. ==>EDIT: definitely do not have this functionality in Android 2.1 (FTB build).
Guest Daz555 Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 For CPU overclocks etc I'd swap SetCPU for No-Frills CPU Control.
Guest sun lbx Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Nice things I use are: PicSel Smart Office Chainfire3D (for lowering texture size in games and squeezing out more FPS) TxtPad - nice txt editor AndroZip Pro - no comments :) TapeMachine - HQ voice recorder & sound editor AlarmDroid - nice app never failing to wake me up))
Guest pedrojaime Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 (edited) try these as smaller alternatives: -Ted (Text Editor) (78kb) -Alarm Klock (167kb) ;) Picsel looks good though rather large Chainfire 3d - wow, what a find, got to play with this later on!! Androzip looks like a great piece of software. btw, I can highly recommend 'Tank Hero Beta' (6137kb) - or download the full, larger version, amazing game, includes haptic feedback when you are shot down.. P.S. I am revisiting having no-frills CPU control instead of SetCPU - so far so good, and less memory used.. thanks! Edited September 30, 2011 by pedrojaime
Guest pedrojaime Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Here are some more gems I have discovered recently: -Power Schedule (42kb) - set scheduled times for telephony, bluetooth, WLAN, Data, Ring profile.. v. useful and light -aLogcat (39kb) - light clear log viewer with filtering capability -Plug in Launcher (153kb) - control behaviour when plugging in headphones/line-out to the 2.5mm jack (and stop certain media players [Vanilla media player] from crashing..) -Shapewriter (1.96Mb): light, fast great swype alternative. You will need to hunt it down via filecrop.com since its been taken off Android Market As ever, anyone who knows of a decent small game, I am all ears.. I find all the good games are a fairly big size (3Mb+ in size download)..
Guest Dante2070 Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 As ever, anyone who knows of a decent small game, I am all ears.. I find all the good games are a fairly big size (3Mb+ in size download).. X-construct and squibbly. I think both are about 1MB
Guest rulerofkaos Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Chainfire3D (for lowering texture size in games and squeezing out more FPS) What settings are you using?
Guest pedrojaime Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 I was not able to find Chainfire3D on Markey, it seems that although I meet the OS requirements (Android 2.1 and higher), I do not have a 1GHz+ processor, at least that's what I am thniking that it did not appear for my phone on market fr install unfortuantely :(
Guest pedrojaime Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Moto X Mayhem Lite- funny game, the lite version is small https://market.andro...e=search_result Others apps i enjoy, i think they are light and fast: MyPhoneExplorer- manage your phone by your computer https://market.andro...e=search_result Battery Solo Widget- Simple battery level indicator https://market.andro....batterys&hl=en RD Mute- Flip your phone face down to quickly mute https://market.andro...e=search_result I found out yesterday that 'batterylife' by curvefish, while larger than 'Battery solo widget', uses less threads and memory than battery solo (I noticed this using 'OS Monitor'. Just an unexpected result for me testing yesterday..
Guest pedrojaime Posted May 2, 2012 Report Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) Great new browser that is fast and seems light: Maxthon Mobile browser Not sure if its a placebo effect but it seems at least as good as Opera Mini and Dolphin browser and includes a private browsing feature and theming (which of course could make it bloated). I am really liking this browser. Other recent discoveries: appsaver - backs up .apks perfectly (except for bought applications which will give errors when re-installed and must be re-validated through Google Play and re-downloaded. Very handy app! ted - nice compact text editor Fileman - nice compact file manager Quick you tube - seems to work better than the stock youtube app and much smaller build.prop Editor - great small, easy-to-use app. could do with a search feature though Any other findings out there I am always interested, thanks!
