Guest Farquea Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I'm a bit of a newbie to all of this and would like it if someone could clarify a few things regarding data, syncing and 2g/3g, wifi etc The goal is to save battery life but actually have apps checking occasionally for notifications etc i am using SwitchPro Widget and getting confused with the Data Connection button and 2G-3G button. if i turn the Data Connection button in the widget to off then i transmit no data but will still receive phone calls, sms and mms right? The 2G-3G button i thought would be a simple switch between the 2 data modes but instead it takes you to the Mobile Network Settings Menu. 2 things, if i did want to select 2G only then that would be GSM only in the Network Mode menu and am i right in thinking that by using 2G (GSM) that this will save on battery life by not using 3G? If so is there some easier way to switch between the 2 than going through this menu? Secondly, if i turn off the Data Connection button on my widget and then go into the Mobile Network Settings menu screen, Data Enabled is still ticked in the menu, surely this should be unticked if ive turned it off in the widget or are the 2 different and if so how? Sorry if this is confusing, but im confused myself, i just want to know how best to save battery life and also i'll be moving to canada next week and will initially be just getting a pay as you go sim card so want to know how to completely turn off all data easily but still get sms, mms etc. Oh and on that note if i disable mobile data, will my apps still all then look for notifications as soon as i connect to wifi and treat it as a mobile connection?
Guest Farquea Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 What ROM are you on? latest GSF build
Guest t0mm13b Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Using 2G instead of 3G will save battery yes. You will still receive Calls, SMS, MMS.... Data Connection refers to apps like Market app, downloading updates for apps, tweets, facebook, gmail and so on. Syncing is where the contacts gets synced to google servers along with gmail, facebook. You can turn off the background data as well via Settings > Accounts & Sync Settings > Background Data. By the sound of it, you're looking for an app that does the job, Extended Controls by Honolulu team, you'll find it in the market place. That has a 2G/3G toggle that does the job for you. I used that when I was on Froyo's Swedish Spring ROM and it was a life-saver! Currently on nightly 209 CM7, there's a power widget tweak in which you can do that selectively by toggling the 2G/3G on the status bar without having to jump into the settings... :)

So what exactly would be considered Background Data, updating weather widgets etc? And just to clarify if i have Data Connection and Background Data all turned off, as soon as i connect to a wireless hotspot all my apps will update as if i had just turned data connection and background data on OR do i need to then turn them both back on and they will then start transmitting but will use the wireless connection and then once i disconnect from the wireless hotspot i'd need to disable both data connection and background data again? Thanks for the Extended Controls hint, i'll check it out now. Thanks for your help

That's 100% spot on! :) And just to clarify if i have Data Connection and Background Data all turned off, as soon as i connect to a wireless hotspot all my apps will update as if i had just turned data connection and background data on OR do i need to then turn them both back on and they will then start transmitting but will use the wireless connection and then once i disconnect from the wireless hotspot i'd need to disable both data connection and background data again? Yes, you will have to explicitly disable them both again. Also, another hint, check out DroidWall, you can block apps from using 3G/Wifi data also. ;)
