screen density to large

hi all i have just been given an lg gt540 that has previously been rooted and the screen density is far to big, i have downloaded an app to change it but it isnt working any its also very annoying when i switch the phone off then on again it just goes back big, i dont know anything about this phone really or how to sort it for good, please can someone help a compleate novice to sort my new phone?
