Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Hi people I am new here, only signed up today. I want to root my Monte Carlo, initially to get rid of the 'bloatware' and remove the pre-installed apps that are taking up valuable space, and have been reading up on how to go about it mostly on this site. I have tried to follow the instructions for Superboot on this forum, but it seems as if 'ingredients have been thrown into the pot at various stages of cooking'. No coherent picture emerges. My questions are: Do you have to back anything up before you start and if so, how? Where are the usb drivers and where do you install them - phone or computer? Clockwork recovery? Do you have to download it first or is it part of the rooting tool? How do you get the computer to stop seeing your phone as a mass storage device? I appreciate that many of this site's members are experienced 'hackers' and do not have to think about the required steps, but imagine you had to say bake a cake and did know what to put into the bowl or how long it would take to cook. So if any kind member could guide me through the process from A to Z, I would greatly appreciate it.

The USB drivers are on my unlcoking thread. 3. That's in the stickied thread. 4. Install drivers from 2
Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 1. Install clockwork mod first and backup your current state. 2. The USB drivers are on my unlcoking thread. 3. Guest spigot Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 1. With clockwor to SD card 2. from pc to phone
Guest tilal6991 Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 1. Backup - how and to where? 2. Install or phone or computer? Like I said, no coherence. 1. Backup. When you are booting if you press yolume up and hold it after installing CWM then you'll get to the CWM menu. There there is an option to backup / restore. 2. To you're computer - it's an exe file.

First you need to install the zte usb drivers (with xp - just works with windows 7) You can find them in pcsuite.iso then do (Better off reading a tutorial on how to use fastboot and adb before you start (Need to enable usb debugging). adb reboot bootloader fastboot boot clockworkmod.img (Full backup you can do then do fastboot flash recovery later).
Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I am sorry people, but I am really getting nowhere. Windwos XP will only see my phone as a mass storage device. The drivers that are on the c drive refuse to be found. I enable usb bugging and plug in the phone try and install superboot and get the messages 'device not found', waiting for device. This is driving me mad. The unlocking hack does not seem anymore promising. All I want to do is get rid of the stuff that Orange installed.

Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Report Posted November 20, 2011 It can't be done. I have downloaded every suggested piece of software. Windows XP refuses to see my phone as anything but a mass storage device. I double click on things, something flashes up in millesecond and I have no idea what is says or where it's gone. I have spent nearly a month getting absolutely nowhere. Time to let it go and get on with my life.
Guest Christian Edwards Posted November 20, 2011 Report Posted November 20, 2011 Lots of people have had driver related issues, I didn't have any luck with XP or my Mac, but found my wife's Win 7 (Starter) netbook worked a treat. Not much help if you don't have different computers to try. I hear Ubuntu works ok too.

[/quote this also happened to me for a short while but look in settings ( i don't no exactly what settings i chose but these are the first settings i changed) USB debugging on, and i allowed mock locations: both of these are in development. also when you connect your phone does the status bar say something like USB connected then if you tap the icon it says turn on USB storage if not download a app called auto USB mount which can sometimes help.
Guest hecatae Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Thanks for the link. I shall have to leave it for next weekend as the Windows computer is at my Mum's - I am a Mac user. http://esausilva.com/2010/10/02/how-to-set-up-adb-android-debug-bridge-in-mac-osx/ try the above
Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 http://esausilva.com...dge-in-mac-osx/ try the above Thanks for the link hecatae, but I do not have an Intel Mac. I emailed Paul about possibly modifying Superboot so that it works with G5, but no response. I am less enamoured of the phone than previously and might just sell it.

You can just compile the gingerbread sdk for darwin-ppc I think (Support removed from ICS) It definitely was supported at one time so just go back using AOSP Do it on a case sensitive filesystem.
Guest unrandomsam Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Look in build/core/main.mk On ICS This is present (Have a look as far back as eclair - if its still got the obsolete bit then try getting a standard gnu toolchain from somewhere and just removing the line). You don't really need the whole sdk. ifeq ($(HOST_OS)-$(HOST_ARCH),darwin-ppc) SDK_ONLY := true $(info Building the SDK under darwin-ppc is actually obsolete and unsupported.) $(error stop) endif
Guest Voxpop2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 Seriously people thanks for trying to help, but I simply do not have a clue what you are talking about. It's coming up to Christmas and lots of parents will be looking for an inexpensive phone for their child. I am going to advertise on my firm's for sale board tomorrow. :)
