Guest xiaoyaoswim Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 You may find this review to be usefull. Unfortunately most powerful offline gps apps are not free.

Guest dadashi Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 (edited) good working navigation is Navigon, iGo and more recently Sygic Navigation. I was watching motorway police and they were on the look out for people using phones... what about the smartphone with navigation, if its stuck to the front wind screen and I have to press the touch screen to take a call or change the route...? Guest Roph Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 I use mapdroyd. It's free, and you can preload a UK map (about 200mb) before you leave. The maps are vector based, hence so small. They're compiled from openstreetmap data.
Guest unrandomsam Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 The best is Navigon (But its also the most expensive - it doesn't like beng started with mobile data disabled either - it works ok if the sim just has no credit). iGO looks to be good but TTS for street names I have not managed to get working. (They only sell to OEM's so only way to get it is to just find the apk somewhere). Copilot 8 is ok (9 is junk or was when I last tried it) better use an alternative TTS to pico though (either SVOX or Loquendo) Synic's route planning is totally useless. Not tried Ndrive.
Guest unrandomsam Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 You can get a trial for most of them. I would start with Navigon (I think its the gold standard it has its own TTS built in (I think based on SVOX) and its reliable).
Guest Paguro Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 I'm using Navitel navigator. Working fine.
Guest Wacky.ddw Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 think you only need to load the map once, then can use with out internet Yes that is correct, i tried that today. When i was at home on my wifi i put in a 10km walking route to the middle of nowhere. ive ridden trough fields and dirt tracks, the GPS allways knew where i was but the map stopped loading. So you only had voice saying when to turn left/right and you could lookup the overview, but the navigation map wasnt working properly. Because it had to load the satellite photo's so it only showed a curve and a rendered starting point. When i was at the destination i allso could go back the same route. But changing to a street nearby wouldnt work. I can imagine downloading the maps on the go would cost A LOT if you have to pay 15€ in the month for 40mb 3G. To the rest thanks for the sugestions i will try them out :D

Does it allso have a option for going on foot or bike? Because i dont actually have a car. (LOL) I know it sounds ridiculous asking for GPS software if you dont have a car. But i go to party's allot and mostly its somewhere in the middle of nowhere so a GPS would come in handy, without asking everyone if they know where it is.
