Just about to get a new budget Android phone for my wife (her first smartphone)... I have a SF running CM7 and thought that it would be a good choice for her. However, since the Monte Carlo has just been unlocked (so she can move to GiffGaff), I am now considering that as an option.

She is an Orange PAYG customer, so they have offered the SF for £80 and the MC for £100 (both including £10 credit)... which to get?

Need to add San Fran 2 into the mix, assuming it is available Monday?

I had considered the SF2, but I'm not sure that it offers anything new other than a front facing camera... some have talked about the screen being AMOLED, but the specs pages I've seen say TFT. MC has bigger screen, same processor and is now unlocked. Also, the SF2 has a lot of bezel... not sure that I prefer the look.

She has a Blade on order for delivery tomorrow (ordered last Friday before the unlock), so we should decide today if we want to change.

Also, is the Monday launch a sure thing?

I can see one vote for the SF... can people please reply with their reason(s) for their recommendation?

Thanks in advance :)

Omc is better for writing text messages in portrait mode,or surfing on net, much more better than osf 3.5 inch;) cpu is clockable to nearly 1ghz on cm7(so faster about 30% vs osf clocked 729mhz). Little better camera. Thats it. After owning osf for 4months i just got annoyed by screen size after trying > =4 inch. But If you prefer compact gadget in your pocket go for Osf:)

oxyg3n89, do you have an OMC? It appears that you are still using a Blade despite the implication that you gave it up after 4 months.

My summary of the two is:

The Monte Carlo has a bigger screen, bigger battery (i.e. lasts longer), better sound from speaker, better camera, camera flash and a faster processor, both can be unlocked and both run CM7 (the OMC version is ported, not official CM - is this an issue?). Only downside of the Monte Carlo is an extra £20 cost. I think it also looks better, though not available in white.

My missus considers the Monte Carlo a brick

Fair point - if it was me then I might lean towards the OSF simply for the ease of fitting in my jeans pocket, but my wife doesn't even carry her little Nokia in her pocket... always goes in her handbag, so not an issue.

Both myself and my wife have just bought a MC today, so our faithful San Fran's can rest for a while.

They are both now unlocked and running a custom ROM.

They are, for us, a great upgrade over our SF, which we have both loved dearly.

The screen size is superb and the flash on the camera is much welcomed. It seems to be fast enough for what we want it to do and having bought it from Orange we got a free goody box with lots of stuff including a pair of these thrown in...

... a great buy indeed.

I think the bigger screen size and faster processor have sealed it for the OMC. I know the processor isn't amazing, but I'm generally happy with my Blade at 700, so a OMC clocked to 900 should be good. dibbles, your comments have also helped influence me :)

Anyway, the poll says OMC 7 to 5... Can't argue with that! :D

You should be seriously impressed with your purchase, or should I say your wife will :)

The screen size difference is superb, just ensure that you get the goody Christmas box from Orange if you buy it from their shops, it really is worth getting that. We bought the last two in our local store today. If you are going to unlock it then make sure that you read the very detailed sticky over in this forums ZTE Skate's section in detail, you will find a few of my panicked posts later on in the thread :D All ended really well for me and the second phone was unlocked without breaking sweat, unlike the first. Just read the thread and pay attention to backing up the file which stores your MAC address for the Wi-Fi so that it can be restored after unlocking the phone.

For me, and others, I would add to that unlocking post...

7a Now place the battery back in your phone before you run the backing up of your QCN file because if you don't you will start to sweat, your heart will pound and your bowels will start to open as you notice your phone is going nuts in a reboot cycle.

Good luck and I hope that you are happy with your purchase, maybe you too will end up with one :)

Hi, I read that the OMC has a screen that will score easier than the OSF?. Is that true?. The sansfransisco must be made out of gorilla glass as i have never scored it. Ok a bunch of keys in the pocket might do it but with reasonable care it lasts well. ? What about the montecarlo?

Osf screen digitizer is made of hard plastic not gorilla glass. I think omc use the same or very similar hard plastic material as it is standart for lower price range phones

Many thanks. The OSF screen is perfect for me so if the OMC is the same it should be a good job also.
