Help with a few basic github things, please? :P

Okay, so I have set up an account and repository.

Now, I have the files in my local copy of the repository folder (that github is supposedly linked to)

How do I actually make these changes online?

What command do I need to use to update certain files from my local repository to the online one?

I you understand if veritifcation is needed after commiting, but after trying various commands (add, commit, merge), I am neither getting an updated repository online or any notifcations of requested changes...

Just a few pointers would be usedful when starting off, I'm not making much sense of this initially, its all a learning curve for me :)
