Pulse CM 6.1 lag problem - please help!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Please help, I am trying to set up a fast phone for my wife.

I was a constant user for 2 years and I've tried almost all roms available for Pulse, but... I exchanged it as a primary phone for HTC HD2 (Android of course :) )

As my wife only needs about 10 apps of 200 kb-1 mb (cache cleaner, and some others) and 3 larger (3-5 Mb - Google Maps, Quickoffice, Facebook) currently the best one is CM 6.

1. I have tried stock with root and Link2SD (looses apps frequently, author even changed upon my initiative some aspects-great programmer, but still problems occur...)

2. Tried 2 custom 2.1 roms but CM options lack from it (status bar widgets and others) - both loose A2SD EXT2 partition often (and recovery is a problem for a nonexperienced user)

3. Installed CM 6 (CM 7 not OK for primary phone cause camera not working), but now... Before every install BOOT, DATA, SYSTEM are formatted from CWM recovery.

On CM 6 I have initiated A2SD for apps (on phone 25 apps in total - mostly smaller) and Dalvik cache is 40 Mb so I have more than 25 Mb free), at boot starts only keyboard (GO Keyboard), CPU Master (OC ondemand Min 245-Max 691 Mhz - kernel 710 Mhz+iptables) launcher (Tencent QQ) and SMS (GO SMS) but still after 10 minutes of use (cca 20 Mb free RAM) the phone starts slowing down.

JIT enabled, Compcache (tried disabled, 10, 18 and max), purge assets, keep SMS in memory, VM tried 0, 12, 16, 18, 24 and 32 Mb) - effects all similar, tried keeping launcher in memory for faster redraw (somewhat better) - Micro SD Card Class 6 8 Gb (tried 10 it even locks the phone, often restart needed+1 one class 6, tried 4 Gb class 6 - little faster) Read cca 13-15 Mb, read 5-7 Mb (little slower cause of A2SD)

Partition layout - FAT32 7.6 Gb, EXT2 256 Mb.

Swap is not active (phone) - tried partition (often EXT2 loss - recovery needed) using, tried Swapper 2 (32-128 Mb) FAT32 size - lags too much in both ways.

Only way to make it moderately faster is to clear Dalvik cache.

Well, my question is, as there isn't enough space on Pulse for even the the small amount of apps needed for a "beginner" user, is there any other way to speed up the phone?

*Currently Opera Mini (installed on /system part) opening in 15 secs, Facebook 10 secs...)*

Well...

After extensive testing and reboots... laugh.gif

The conclusion is that 6.1 can work, but app optimized, so to start...

1. Cyanogenmod settings - Compcache off, VM 24 Mb, JIT enabled

2. CPU OC - 652 Mhz (even 614/633 Mhz the same effect, but 652 less app startup leg) - Ondemand OC, 44 % up.

3. Free stock sms/mms, added Chinese youni based (cca 1 Mb apk, dalvik not large) - startup time 1-3 sec

4. Dialer repleaced with exDialer (great MIUI based, small memory footprint - a little over 500 Kb) - starts in 0,5-2 sec - cached in memory less than 5 Mb

5. Video only for MP4/3GP - Tried even for AVI - only acceptable for higher fps was QQplayer, Moboplayer fast startup but a large apk+codec, avi high fps stutters

6. Launcher - this was a massive search:

a) LauncherPro-lags on 2+ widgets and in dock

B) QQLauncher-faster but slow initialization and redraw

c) GoLauncher (great, but... to large for "small" pulse) - lags, lags and lags some more... cool.gif

d) ADWLauncher - solid, sometimes delayed initialisation, problem is when low on memory, init. lasts 5-10 secs

and the winner is:

e) 360 Launcher - Great! Themeable, english version (from 1.2 beta with 15+ themes) - fast, smooth (even on pulse with 30+ apps) - active in memory only 10 Mb with taskkiller and battery saver - redraws instantly.

+ Integrated Lock screen similar to active theme

7) Browser - Tested with 4, 3 in finals ere Zircos (opencode, nice features), xScope (initialisation 2-6 secs) and Opera (works great when initialised-from 4-8 secs) - still undecided

8) Music - MIUI Music player, only 800 Kb, initialises in 1-3 secs - Nice! tongue.gif

9) Picture viewer, QuickPic of coures, MIUI gallery OK, but a little to dark (no possible options and customizations)

I think it covers almost all aspects, only to mention...

*No swap partition - lags all apps, not reccomended under 691/710 Mhz OC - high battery drain*

*Do not flash A2SD for more options - used Link2SD instead... better customization, used internal memory for most needed apps - Dialer on internal, SMS on System+Internal,...)*

*DPI changed to 140 - best usage/size*

*2048 SD Cache set+autostart apps only esential*

If anyone interested I can create a ROM which would be All in one for flash, I will post a Video for show...

sure, please do, the more options we have the better.

thanks.

I will only comment on this one thing: swap.

My experience is that having bad lag because of swap is related to the swappiness setting. In CM6.1, turning off Compcache (which you say you did) results in swappiness jumping up to 60! That is way too high and causes serious lag problems for everything. So in my previous mods of CM6.1, I was very specific in my instructions to reduce swappiness to eliminate lag. And in the TXG rom, I have pre-set swappiness to 15, which is a conservative number. I do not experience lag with swappiness at 15. Of course YMMV.

There are so many factors influencing the performance of any particular rom. It is very difficult to make emphatic statements about what does and doesn't work or what is an optimal setting or not.

Thanks TWRock for giving your opinion, but I must go alomg with the part that optimisation is subjective.

In my case, although a Swap partition exist, the lag is appearant in the following combinations:

Compcache on - lag with or without swap (15,30,60)

Compcache off-lag (less) with or without swap (15,30,60)

So I can agree that it depends even of the phone...

Currently, still only larger apps (3 Mb+) cause a few seconds delay, but for the last year or more this combination offers me the most speed and flexibility, I hope that someone other that me will agree when I upload customized rom.

FYI

Tommorow I will upload Antonio PT and Tom G based full customized ROM.

I must still zip it up, tweak build.prop and finish the ROM update script...

Just a quick notice regarding CPU OC, I've tested and on my 2 devices better option is CPU Master 2.2 (after writing to the programmer which resolved all profile switching problems works great), so it will be included...

In testing the best camera option was mdpi Miui camera( wildfire), but bug for several shots persists (fc) so if anyone can manage to get a workaround for that would be great (to have several options for camera)

Video (3-5 mins duration) will also be included in post... Just an addon... Quick show of operation...

Tweaks:

Tweaked build.prop (COMPCACHE OFF, DALVIK VM 24 Mb,...)

+

/data/local.prop for no kill launcher (uncheck CM6 options for keep launcher in memory)

Apps (speed up...)

Replaced default Laucher with China based 360 Launcher (ultra smooth)

+

SMS apps (youni based)

+

primary keyboard - latest Go Keyboard (add language from market by choice)

+

Default browser - open code Zirco (not perfect but fast)

Added several apps to System and Data (List later...)

Please make sure that you are using UK 2.1 ROM partition layout

Please clean Dalvik before install (Data also reccomended) - CM 6.1 could be compatible but not tested

Please send feedback, tommorow I will post more detailed info.

Long live the Pulse!
