Touch Screen Problem - Hardware of Software Issue?

When i turn onmy Nexus One from a cold boot, the touch controls goes crazy. i can’t even typeon the keyboard because the device registers other keys and not the one I’mactually touching but when i press the power button to put the device to sleepthen immediately turn it back on again the problem is gone. Does anybody knowif this is a software or hardware problem and is there a solution or should ijust get a replacement phone?
