With the many problems arising from the NEW! SPV fone, I'm really sure that we are the guinea pigs for this product release onto the UK market.

Like all software based technology, early versions of these are usually riddled with bugs no doubt, but with this phone developed by the biggest software company in the world with millions of pig sweat poured into the pot, I'm sure the people sitting behind their plush MS office's in Silicon Valley knew exactly what was wrong with this phone before ever thinking about releasing it onto the market, I'm sure at some point down the line, Bill Gates would have used the SPV along with the 1000's of MS employees and from that they should have been able to identify the faults and problems of the SPV.

I'm also sure that that MS would have the resources and finance to set back the launch date of the phone to do more riggorous testing. Why do they not learn by their mistakes? why why why?

I havnt got the spv phone yet on my hands but already I want to phone the the phone company up to cancel my order.

I have about 1 week left before I receive delivery of the fone and then a further 14 days to decide whether or not to keep it.

I hope MS and Orange announce suitable software fixes and release the many restictions it has enforced onto the SPV. With this being a new product too, They should really dispatch a team of technical staff to listen to the consumers voice!

Think about it. Without us, there wud be no orange and there wud be no Microsoft!

Blah!

I can understand the points made - but you say all of this and you haven't even got your SPV yet!

Even with plenty of testing by microsoft and Orange staff, there is no way at all that they could come up with the bugs we have. I mean the people who were testing probably didnt use the SPV as thier primary mobile, thus meaning that they probably didnt use every feature in every concevable way.

I admit that there are a lot of bugs with this phone, but lets remember that it is the first mobile of its kind released to the open market, we just have to hope that orange are looking at this forum and taking notes on the bugs. I mean, lets face it, it aint gonna take very long to make and install patches for these tiny little bugs we are finding, its just a problem that there are so many tiny little bugs!

Its true there are a fair few niddling features that definately require attention, but there are some things the phone does well, I think the browsing experience is far better than wap / colour wap and Orange have done well with the news site and other services that are available via the SPV and they are adding new backgrounds and ringtones quite regularly so "fair does" to Orange.

Its a shame that the bugs are so niddily and I can bet there are fixes on the way as microsoft alone have too much invested in this phone, but at a guess there is also involvement of third parties, e.g. the MMS client is produced by Ezos, so that could explain why these things are not being fixed in days :D

Also the phone supports wap provisioning, etc so the bug fixes might not come via Orange update, in the perfect world we'll all wake up one morning to find all the "niddling fetures" banished

I think they could've and should've tested in a better way.

An example would be selecting technically advanced people who had queried the release of the SPV - and had a genuine interest in obtaining/using the phone.

I've been able to experience at least half the bugs reported without having seen them first in the bugtrack list, so 100 testers of the device should easily pick up on the majority of the bugs.

That said, I'm sure there were many bugs that were picked up.

I agree with you, I do feel like I'm being made to test a device. I think this is primarily because it's been manufactured by such well-known people - if you were to compare this phone to an equivalent Nokia (when one's out), it would be similar to comparing a Dell PC to one you got from a local cheap PC store, or a Netgear router to my cheap Taiwan one...

Of course, the bugs aren't major - just inconveniences, and I'm sure MS will iron them out very soon.

yup, definately more testing which im sure MS will doing at the moment in time, somewhere in silicon valley a bunch of guys with a 1000 of these fones trying to sort out its problems and occasionally launching the SPV's at each other because they are so invaluably cheap.

I remember the 1st WAP phone introduced by Nokia, remember the 7110? the green phone with the matrix style ejection keycover....

WAP was just a pain in the backside and its interface was so slow when trying to get into the menu system and it sometimes crashed too.

In saying all this, at least we can appreciate the pleasure of a personal device which lets us to phone, send messages, access the internet, photo mesaging and alot more.....u know there are people in this world who don't even have a basic pulse dialling phone in their house.
