Text and Gmail Appearance on Acer C6 Liquid

I've just got my hands on a C6 Liquid on T-mobile and have been impressed with the screen quality for both videos and games. The resolution used for the messaging and Gmail apps is, however, horrible! The text looks washed out and grainy against a dull grey background, making me think that I need glasses. Any advice on improving this would be gratefully received.

I've discovered Chomp as an alternative to the standard SMS app on the phone. This looks very nice in comparison and the display options can be modified. Not discovered anything as yet to replace Gmail though.
