Which SD card do you use with S120 and why?

I bought a 32 Gb class 10 Lexar one and then found couple of threads at XDA developers forum regarding its poor performance with smartphones.

Returned it to the seller and since then not sure which card to buy.

Was tempted to go for SanDisk 32 Gb class 4 as it's better than 16 Gb version, but I missed the time they were for £17.99, now it's much more expensive.

Can you share your experience regarding SD cards - which brand/size/class do you use with your Acer Liquid Metal and why?

Also, just a quick question - is the ringer of S120 really quiet or I'm unlucky one? If I put it into the pouch it came with, it's difficult to hear when it rings. All the volumes set to maximum.

If you're using a rom with the Dolby stuff in it, like the stock rom, you may want to try turning all the options off. It should get louder.

I tried switching it on and off and could hear no difference in the loudness of the ringer. Vibration is weak as well so it's so easy to miss a call when you're in a busy place.. :(

I use a Class 10 16GB. I think it's some cheapish brand and it fares okay apart from on very small writes.

I use it because I bought it for my last phone and haven't invested in a new one. Was looking at Samsung 32GB Class 10's though.

thanks mate, you're the first! ;)

do you really need this class 10? many mp3/video transfers or similar?

I really don't think smartphones are optimized with class 10s in mind....I got one to have a backup card in hand for the DSLR. (And it was on sale...like 85% off...)

A few. It was more because it was reasonably priced at the time and I was running out of space on my 8GB card.

Yeah that's probably true. These threads seem to support the idea that Class 4 - 6 are adequate.

I know they're threads for better spec'd devices but still.

This seems like a good deal: http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/22145588/SanDisk-Mobile-Ultra-16GB-Micro-SD-HC-Memory-Card-Class-6/Product.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518%7Ccat:22145588%7Cprd:22145588

http://forum.xda-dev...64#post20984964 indicates the SanDisk Class 4 is the 32GB card to go for.

Play have it for £24.

My Lexar Class 10 has just gone back too ...

Yup, I think the SanDisk is probably what I will buy when I get a new phone (hopefully not too long).

Bit of a shame there aren't any 32GB Class 6 cards. That would be a good balance between normal phone use and the ability to transfer big files.

it's not the cheapest (£35) but the samsung 32gb class 10 wouldn't be a bad investment for this device and beyond...

I was considering that one, it's £30 on eBay from reputable sellers.

But after reading quite a few threads it seems a Class 4 would be a better option, at least for someone who doesn't transfer big files to their phone very frequently.

yeah i imagine class 4 would be fine for any use on this phone, providing it's a decent brand that performs well. the most bitrate intensive write task would be recording 720p video. i'm sure that falls well within class 4 write speeds (maybe someone has the numbers for the Liquid MT) providing performance is as claimed.

i got a samsung (the 16gb class 6) because i've had nothing but perfect experience with samsung memory cards.

I got a Lexar 8 GB Class 10 sd, it writes at 9 MB/s and reads over 28 MB/s. I am kinda satisfied, coming from a 4 GB class 4 Sandisk which is much less performant ;)

well, according to some articles on the net higher class cards are good with big files like mp3s or videos, but struggle with small ones, which is common with smartphones.

eventually tried 32 Gb Class 4 Sandisk card and compared it with 4 Gb Class 4 Kingston one using CrystalDisk and h2testw for Windows.

everything is similar to XDA developers thread.

test using h2testw killed the microSD-to-USB Kingston adaptor - it dosn't show any card' content anymore, just an empty reader..

after reading some more test results went to conclusion that it's pretty pointless to test cards not in the phone itself, the results reflects nothing real and practical as phone's interaction with a card is not the same as computer's interaction with a card via USB.

Sandisk card works well, no "SD card removed unexpectedly" so far, fingers crossed ;)

i use a TRANSCEND 16gb class 10

i always used transcend in the past with my reflex and other cameras and never had any sort of porblems

i just moved to the 16gb from another transcend 8gb some days ago and thanks to mini partition tool i copied the content of the 2 partitions (fat32 and Ext2) very easily

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I believe it's pretty safe to use many well-known brands (like Sandisk, Kingston, Samsung Transcend etc) with this device if you buy it from a reputable seller (to make sure it's original). I don't know about video recording, but for everything else class 4 is enough, there is no need to jump higher if you're not a millionaire ;)

for 24 euro you get a 16gb transcend from amazon class10

it's very important to get at least class 6 if you want to record HD video, at least with Lgcamera Pro (for a very good AAC audio)
