Why would I use a SD-Ext Partition

I have just bought a Class 10 Micro SD for my phone, what is the benefit of using SD-Ext over the standard Apps to SD function built into Android. I am running the latest Cyanogen build. Would someone explain the differences between the Apps2SD and the SD-Ext and guide me through how to use SD-Ext.

Any help is much appreciated I did try searching the forum but it didn't help very much and the post I found on XDA didn't really help me understand.

In CM7 app2sdext is called S2E. It's benefit is every app is in SD. The normal App2sd let's you move some apps. 2gb ext partition is more than enough. Personally I use 1gb partition on my 8gb Kingston and I still have alot of room, but I tend to have a few Nandroids in it.

the most obvious benefit is that it gives you more room as a result of that. With build in apps2sd you can still run out of space whereas with an sd-ext partition and S2E from market you can put all the data associated with an app on the sd card if you so choose.

With normal apps2sd, part of the app remains on the internal memory taking up space. This means you will eventually run out of space. With apps2ext, the entire app is on the sdcard meaning you can install as many apps as you have space for on the ext partition.

do APPS get installed automatically then to the EXT partition ? or do you still need to 'move' them via manage apps.

What about system apps & stuff that works better from phone rather than SD ?

with built in apps2sd the application decides where to install by default (although you can override the default in CyanogenMod). With S2E your settings apply to all apps - you don't have to keep moving them at all.

Are there any drawbacks from doing this? I know some apps will not work on Apps2SD is this the same case for SD-Ext?

Will I notice a performance loss when running these apps?

How do I partition the SD so that I can had SD-Ext I tried before and couldn't get it to work.

The FAQ has a quick guide under the heading "I want to use A2SD but what do I do".

My understanding that the only thing that won't work when an app is stored on the SD card is you will be unable to have the associated widget on your 'desktop'.

As for performance, I am unsure if it's unduly effected. I anticipate any performance loss would be minuscule, if at all.

Can i use the partition option in CWM to achieve this? I read the FAQ would I be right in guessing CM7 uses Ext4

Well S2E works great with all widget integration :D

Thank you everyone for your help, after using GParted to format and partition my SD Card S2E couldn't pickup my Secondary partition but no matter I installed Link2SD which served my needs much better and it all works wonderfully free space here I come :)

just to clarify something said earlier - with S2E the app is moved to SD but data stays in RAM.

Hi ColdEmbrace,

IMHO... I find S2E works the best! :)

However that said, S2E only works on CM7 builds, and will not be viewable in the Market under any other ROM!!

S2E works best, because once setup, you can forget about it.. it moves all the Apps (and their data/cache) to the SD too, every single part of the App moved to the SD Ext partition. With that, All Widgets work too... (which the default Apps2SD does not allow Widgets if not on the phone).

I currently have summit like 220x (or more Apps) on my phone, (installed on the SD Ext partition) and when I view whats stored on the actual phone, it only shows 3Mb used, with summit like 297Mb free on internal storage. - (SETTINGS) It's important to go into the Settings, and Advanced... I think it is, there are a couple of check boxes (cant recall what now, without seeing) that actually makes it work, and detect the partition.... as I had this problem too.

That said, Links2SD is a good runner up, and is the 2nd best in the field at doing that. Like S2E, it moves all the Apps over to the SD-Ext partition, and I believe it also allows Widgets to run too... Its not as easy to use as S2E to use, however the big advantage, it runs on all ROMs and not just CM7. And just recently, it appears to be updated to support ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) too, which is a big plus for me, as I needed it to run on HoneyComb a few weeks ago, which it didnt... but now it runs just fine.... :)

So yeah, S2E is best, followed by Links2SD.... all others are what I call "Half a job" as it does move data, but not all of it... :(

Cheers, Lister

The thing is I don't want to move all of the apps to the SD. This means that Link2SD does exactly what I need it to do. I am sure there is some reduction in performance probably less noticeable in our low end phone but I'm more than happy with it this way :).

I appreciate the advice it was the kind of advice that I was looking for when deciding the best way to set up to S2E/L2SD but it is all done now. I just hope there is enough information in this thread to help someone else in need.

It has certainly clarified a few things for me. Much of this kind of info has gone right over my head before; and I have been reading this forum for nearly a year now!

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.

Edit. The main drawback I find to using S2E is that I have a lot of application shortcuts on my desktop and it takes forever for the correct icons to appear during boot (the whole phone is extremely unresponsive during this time). Once everything has loaded in (about three mins) it is as smooth and responsive as you could want.

Yeah on boot it takes some time....anyway you have to sacrifice something for the other
