Sorry if this seems a stupid question but what music files can be played back on the San Francisco?

Some media players may support extra formats, though they'll be decoding in software. You'll get the most efficiency out of HE-AACv2, you can squeeze 44khz stereo audio into as low as 25-30 kbit/s.

But the standard media player on android doesn't support these?

It does. Those are the formats and specs supported by the android platform itself. If a phone or tablet is an Android phone or tablet, then it by default supports those formats.
