Guest Victor von Zeppelin Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Google sky maps, one of the original "hey look what my phone can do" apps for Android has been dropped by Google. Many people remember the wonder of first opening the app and seeing the stars align to where you point your phone - even if not everyone is keen on astronomy, it was a pretty good party trick to show what the (then) new platform could do. So it is sad that Google will not be supporting it any further. However all is not lost, as Google also announced sky maps will be going open source, allowing it to be maintained and developed by devs with a greater interest in astronomy. In the meantime, the Google-made app is still available in the market, and we wait and see what comes out of the open source project.
