Guest Chief Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I'd like to ask the expert advice of those of you here lucky enough to have used both the Orange SPV and the new SPVx, aka Tanager. Orange's news releases have all mentioned the launch date as sometime in April, but speaking to an Upgrades guy a few days ago he knew nothing at all about it, nor could find anything on his system. My question is then, should I wait for who knows how long it might actually be for the SPVx and its superior screen/better buttons, OR go on down to the Orange shop tomorrow and get me one of "the original" SPVs? Is the difference really that spectacular? Also, has anyone had any luck in negotiating a better price than £99.99 with either the Upgrade Dept or Customer Relations?
Guest Vector Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I saw someone on here say that Orange was waiting to sell all its SPV's before they started selling the SPVX which could be around September time  ....and by then they might wait for Smartphone 2003 to come out.. :?

They still need some replacements though, and once everyone has an SPV, no-one wants to buy a new contracted SPVx.
Guest virdirs Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Cheif, I managed to get my SPV for £74 upgrade, i know it's not a big saving but it's something,it'll pay for a memory card. Got this dorect from orange on 150, and just said that I wanted a discount as I had been a long time customer, my bills were high and always paid, and taht someone else was giving me the same phone cheaper. SO they came back to me with £75 which i couldn't be bothered with haggling with. Plus I've sold my old T68 and mp3 player for £140 which was cool!

Guest fraser Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 £74 pound upgrade? You can get them on a new contract for 10 quid if you shop around, on the YP 200 plan.
Guest The unexpected guest ! Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 The SPVx will not be sold in UK until September-October 2003. The SPVx will be firstely sold in May in Danmark and Switzerland. bye
Guest midnight Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 where are people getting this september/october for spv e100? wouldnt that be a bad move? smartphone 2003/.net is being sent to mobile operators/manufacturers around the same time (then possibly 2 months or less of testing), people will know this and then wait for the latest .net smartphone to be released. It would make no sense at all for O to wait that long.
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 sorry september??? thats not what the 3 orange shops in leicester seem to think. i went in on saturday, to ask them bout the new spvx to be told that the name had changed to spve100, and an early may release date had been put down on the table. theres a slight difference between sepember and may people! tj
Guest midnight Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 i heard april/may from a news article on the O website
Guest The unexpected guest ! Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 THE SPVx will not be sold in UK until September-October. It was announced by Orange at Mobius 2003 last week. If you don't believe me then ask to Paul. Paul can you confirm for them?
Guest amo Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I think im gona wait till the asus handset comes out on ozone, however I doubt orange will launch it
Guest midnight Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 calm down, i believe you, no need for the red writing, i just wanted to know where you heard it from, if its from mobius thats fine, thats more recent information from what i heard, thats all i wanted to know and i'll i'm saying is, unless they change the os in the spv e100 then the sales in the uk will be very slow (too little too late as it where)
Guest Chief Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 This MDC report seems to confirm the (now) SPV E100's postponement: http://www.newswireless.net/articles/030402-flop.html 6) Sales of SPV phones have been encouraging; but there is more production than pull through the channel, and Orange has had to postpone its launch of the SPV E100 upgrade - except for in Scandinavia. It may actually not be able to sell this model in the UK or France before the 2004 model is launched, especially if sales slow in expectation of the new hardware. I will have another go at speaking to Upgrades today, I would be pretty annoyed if I bought an SPV now and the E100 did indeed come out in May. Can I also ask if anyone can confirm or refute that Orange shops are now "no longer allowed" to offer any sort of discounts on upgrades from them?
Guest vijay555 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 oh pooh, now i'm even more confused. the MDC article seems pretty believable and understandable in terms of roadmaps, which means SPVx release is even more nebulous... i've been waiting since Feb to get my hands on SPVx. buggery, unless someone clears this up soon, i'm buying a Nokia 5110 with some sexy flashing covers... Come save me Paul..
Guest midnight Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 they may aswell scrap the launch in the uk completely then cos the 200mhz+ processor smartphones will be available, so why buy something thats inferior  only thing i can think of is they may be released with a rediculously low price tag, its the only way they'll sell, or, shovel a 200mhz processor into the e100 and release it as e200 or somethin. i know for certain that as soon as my contract runs out i'll want the fastest smartphone on the market at that time, essential for games development
Guest spacemonkey Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 given the quality of information/speculation from Orange in regards to releases and updates etc, I wouldn't worry too much about SPVx and timing. A good assumption to work on is: If it's out right now, and you can buy/download it RIGHT NOW, then it's real and it exists. If it doesn't pass these 2 tests then it doesn't exist, it's a work of fiction and you should not base anything in your life on it. Actually that's a good way to approach anything in the IT world.
Guest vijay555 Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 spacemonkey: isn't that very much a case of if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it... SPVx has "existed" for quite a while (eg fcc page), but i'm getting quite concerned that it might never "exist" for us retail, or at least in any useful timeframe. If they leave it till 3rd quarter, we'll be considering 3g and/or 200+mhz smartphones. I think that if orange doesn't release it soon, they've scored an enormous own goal. I'm not going to buy an SPV knowing SPVx exists, but if it doesn't come soon, i'll just have to forego the whole SPV series (btw, my impatience comes from my 8210 being half-inched last week, which i was keeping just to tied me over until SPVx, but now w/o a phone, i'm clinging to the hope that SPVx will be released "in april") Despite mixed opinions of Orange, i think they're generally good, but it seems that their FUD has resulted in a goregous bit of vapourware. http://www.zazie.at/SpecialEditions/Pierre.../ATreeFalls.htm

Guest dog Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 who makes a smartphone with 200Mhz+ processor? when's it coming onto the market? Cheers.
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 What article are you on about hax? That link just goes to the post you made about spvxes being out in May (from a dubious source)
Guest Hax Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 That's the one - was mainly a response to vijay555 who was expressing concern about SPVx not being available in the near future.... Hax
Guest spacemonkey Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 The intel based smartphones are quoted to be based around a 200Mhz XScale processor. Of course, in the pocket pc community I've heard that windows CE isn't overly optimised for XScale and that the memory bandwidth from these chips isn't too hot, so don't expect it to be twice as fast as some other brand 100Mhz ARM, but the performance should still be a significant boost over our current 84Mhz ARM SPV. Currently there is definitely the Mitac Mio 8380 clamshell phone probably hitting the streets later this year and there's also the intel reference design making the rounds. Lots of other speculated on gear running the same chipset, due "who knows when".
Guest vijay555 Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Hax, i understand what you're saying, but what i should have emphasised was that if they really do delay until 3rd quarter then SPVx will be relatively old hat. www.msmobiles.com is saying Mitac is going to be released in May/June http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/571.html Now even factoring in usual hype, knowing that Mitac might get to our shores some time this year is going to make a few people think twice about snapping up a soon-to-be-superceded phone. Don't get me wrong, i'd snap up an SPVx yesterday, even at full retail price, and even over Mitac (don't like clamshell) because i've lost my phone, boo hoo. I can wait a while, but it's going to be a relatively hot year Smartphone wise, and although i wouldn't use a Mitac, the xScale technology etc is going to make SPV look merely "adequate". Hence, i reckon that it'd be wiser to rush out SPVx now and capture what market they can b4 the other manufactures get on the scene. Something similar happened with the WinCE devices: we used to have multiple platforms/chips before they settled PocketPc on Arm. the move to xScale might herald the same for Smartphone (and Smartphone 2004....) However, seeing the palava over the Soft-Keyboard tends to convince me that i s'pose there's no point getting impatient. Orange'll get round to it in their own time, however excited/frustrated we might be... V
Guest Chief Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 I spoke to a guy in my local Orange shop today. He had also been told the late April date but said "knowing Orange" it would most likely be the end of May before the SPV II arrives. His estimate of the likely price was somewhere in the region of £150 to £180 (for upgrades at least).
