TurboViewer provides FREE 3D viewing for DWG files

TurboViewer isn't the first DWG viewer on the Android Market, but it's the first to provide fluid viewing of 3D objects!

Using your Android device for viewing of CAD drawings won't seem like the best solution when you're behind your desktop, but on the move, at a conference and so on it may well be the best option! From my point of view, as an actual user of AutoCAD, it will be a nice addon when I want to show off my new drawings in meetings.

Read on after the break, where I'll go more into detail.

TurboViewer is a very well built app, designed for easy navigation and fast operation. The UI is clean and self explanatory, but you'll have to accept a small bar of ads at the bottom if you don't want to pay the extra ~$5 for the ad free version (which is nothing compared to what you spend on your other CAD tools). It comes preloaded with models in 2D and 3D to try out.

The navigation is multitouch, lag free and very easy to understand. Navigating 2D drawings is done with one finger for panning, two fingers for zooming. Navigating 3D drawing is done with two fingers for paninng, rotating the object with one finger and zooming with two fingers. It has some nice shortcuts built in too, like double tapping with one finger gives you an overview of the object, and double tapping with two fingers gives you full screen.

A button at the top left gives you a list of the DWG files found on your device. Adding new elements can be done by simply sending a DWG to your Gmail. A little bug, or at least I think so, is that the back button exits the application instead of taking you back to the main screen with the already opened object when you are in that DWG list. The top right button gives you the list of views saved on the drawing, together with a selection of background colours. There's also a button at top center which gives you full screen, but I'll be using double tap with two fingers instead.

I have to say something about the stability of the app also, as it has crashed three times in 15 minutes. Each time I was doing something different in the app, so I can't find exactly where it stops or why. All in all TurboViewer is a great app, lightweight with few options, but at the same time a very handy tool. I can see myself using this app in my daily work!

Hello Novek,

As discussed and you have confirmed. We issued an update for TurboViewer 1.0.1 Android, a day after this article was released and you mentioned "that you have tried it for days and could not get it to crash". So we are happy that the stability problems you mentioned for your specific device was fixed.

Thanks.
