Guest bibon Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 Siemens has revealed a brand new smartphone running the Symbian OS platform. It is expected to hit the market till this summer, supporting almost everything! A picture of the SX1:
Guest Shuflie Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 Looks like they've taken a worng turn somewhere with the design of that phone, bit like nokia have doing lately too. Don't they realise that people are used to the normal keypad layout? I wonder how typists would react if every computer and typewriter manufacturer were to change their keyboards' layouts depending on what they thought might be fashionable that month?
Guest jaknife2000 Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 True true there, the keyboard looks a bit weird. I bet that must be fun trying to learn how to SMS with the keyboard around the side ? Oh well, we will have to wait and see.
Guest Gorskar Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 Oh dear is all I can say. If that phone goes ahead with the numbers up the sides then it will be all but useless for messaging. It looks 100× worse than the nokia3650.
Guest HelloDave Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 That's what happens when you let arty people loose with real designs, and allow concepts to escape into the real world  It might look nice on paper or as a clay model, but has anyone actually tried using one? Then again I would say that, I'm an engineer, with no artistic talent! :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 (Also being an engineer...) If you think about it you can't use it single handedly, which the SPV does very well. To type SMS's on the Siemens you would have to hold it in a similar way to a games console control pad, or else you would constantly be covering the screen when you strech your thumb to the other side. At least the joystick looks a little more useable than the SPV's though...

At least this Siemens has a relatively pleasing overall design, at least from an aesthetics point of view. The 3650 just looks wrong. That circular "dial"? How twee is that? F...... Nokia.

You are totally right my friend! :)
Guest Gorskar Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 Yes, true, perhaps I went over the top there - the nokia3650 is an extremely shoddy design. I was mainly referring to the ease of input. Whilst that siemans looks nice it would be impossible to use one handed to bash out a quick text. The nokia might be slightly (debatably) easier to use one handed than the siemans (havnt tried so dont know) - but agreed it's design is the worst I've seen in a long time.

I suspect that you're right, the Nokia will be better to use than this Siemens - and the SPV (or any "normal" phone) is better than any of them :)
Guest Rob.P Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Is it me or does the joystick, although more useable than ours, look like it sticks out too much? That would be (quite literally) a pain. As with most manufacturing industries they are running low on different designs (look at the car market), so throw out a concept design and wow everyone and lets hope that hides how they have missed out loads of functionality from the phone.
Guest Firaas Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Heh, my 6 year old sister would probably think that was a younger child's toy...
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Heh, my 6 year old sister would probably think that was a younger child's toy... *lol* When it is, in fact, an older child's toy for tech-victims like us
Guest Rog Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Ummm. Could be making (more) of a fool of myself here but.......... If held in, say, your left hand with screen upmost, using thumb curled naturally around the back you can press keys 1-5 +* Fingers naturally placed to use index to do keys 6-0 +# Bit like playing a guitar (purists wouldn't use their thumbs though!). :) Is that how it is meant to be used?! :?
Guest Shuflie Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 (purists wouldn't use their thumbs though!). I think you may find that true phone purists only use their thumb (to txt and dial that is :))
Guest Rog Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 I think you may find that true phone purists only use their thumb (to txt and dial that is :)) I sit corrected! ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 That looks big... and two handed use :/
Guest sebset Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Same size as Nokia 7650, I think.
Guest Rog Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 That looks big... and two handed use :/ 'She said'!!!!!!! :) Couldn't resist it..... At least I was half right about using it though!
Guest HelloDave Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 That would really bug me having to use two thumbs to even dial a number! If it's 7650 size then you wouldn't be able to reach both sets of numbers with 1 thumb either - what are they thinking! And it'd be useless for games that are designed to use the standard keypad - imagine trying to play tennis addict on it! When will designers learn - it's good to think outside "the box" but remember "the box" is there for a reason so don't change it unless you can justify it with more than "the new design looks nicer". In other words - for most situations, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)
Guest spacemonkey Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 And as big as a 7650/P800... damn that's one of the appeals of the SPV is that it's small... sure it costs you on battery capacity and external camera, but I can put it in my shirt pocket.

Agreed - the SX-1's light though, according to sebset's post - the 7650 weighs a bloody ton (ok, cut me some slack here). Still, when I need a PDA then I'll just dig my "old" iPaq out (GPS jacket, how cool?)
