ZTE-Z990 ClockWorkMod Recovery

I have a ZTE-Z990 Avail, which I managed to root, and I would like to add a backup/restore option to enable recovery, prior to starting more firmware experiments.

Couldn't find any ClockWorkMod ZTE ROM that didn't crash the device, so I guess I need help building an understanding of what it takes to modify recovery.img.

Partition images are available (boot, recovery, system).

Any hints welcome - maybe someone has started already?
